JOSEPH — The Josephy Center will open the show “Nez Perce Artists, Traditional and Contempo- rary” with a reception from 2-4 p.m. Jan. 5. The center is located at 409 N. Main St., Joseph. Stacia Morfin, a young artist and entrepreneur, is the curator of this show, which features traditional as well as contemporary art. War clubs, bead work, basket hats, paintings — all the work of tribal artists. Most of the artists are just beginning careers in art, but both seasoned and emerging artists will be featured in the exhibit. According to a press release, “the Josephy Center welcomes this opportunity to work with tribal artists and to help further their careers in art and in the communi- cation of Nez Perce culture to the broader world.” Community Choir’s winter term starts Jan. 9 Community African Drumming class set LA GRANDE — A workshop in Community African Drumming for ages 12 and older begins Jan. 7 and will meet from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays through March 17 at Loso Hall, Room 123, at Eastern Oregon Uni- versity in La Grande. Community African Drumming is made up of students and com- munity members practicing the traditional music of Western Africa. All skill levels are welcome. The teaching artist is Luke McKern. Abstract painting class offered at Josephy Center JOSEPH — Jennifer Klimsza will teach “Abstract Painting — Feel the Color” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, 409 N. Main St., Joseph. This workshop is for all levels, including beginners. The focus will be to explore the action and reaction of color on canvas, and 13 to Feb. 2 upstairs at Wine Down, 115 Depot St., La Grande. The price per lesson is $10 and includes a beer. All levels and ages welcome. Drop-ins are welcome, and no partner is needed. Come learn the basics of salsa, bachata and more. LA GRANDE — The Grande Ronde Community Choir’s winter term will run from Jan. 9 to March 12. Rehearsals are from 7-9 p.m. Thursdays at Loso Hall, Room 123, at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. The Grande Ronde Community Choir is a 50-65 voice mixed choral ensemble open to community members, high school students and EOU students, staff and faculty. The choir rehearses and performs a wide variety of choral literature ranging from major works with orchestra to spirituals and musical theater repertoire. Three or more concerts are scheduled each year. Periodic concerts are presented in conjunc- tion with the EOU Chamber Choir, Oregon Chorale and the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra. WEEKEND OUTLOOK Learn the engraving art of the scrimshaw JOSEPH — Terri Rice will teach “The Art of Scrimshaw” from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 18 at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, 409 N. Main St., Joseph. Scrimshaw is an engraving art that originated in the early 1800s. Originally the material used for scrimshaw was whalebone and whale teeth. It was created out of the sheer boredom of endless hours spent on whaling ships waiting for that elusive whale to appear. As a result, scrimshaw is mostly nauti- cal themed and fairly intricate. The cost is $40. Pre-registration is required nine days before the start of class. No experience is necessary. Drop-ins welcome at Saturday family art classes JOSEPH — Every Saturday, the Josephy Center offers a family art class from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost is free or by donation.
