("Monkeys iss dor craziet people . Anyhow, Conquest on CBS-TV came up with a fascinating film report Sunday night showing ex periments with monkeys that seem to prove that soft "contact comfort" is the key to infantile mother love. Next, NBC-TV's Hiv- erboat hud Vincent Price using a trained ape to do his pocket-picking. Dennis the Menace on CBS- TV dealt with a TV space show and "Lt. Pepp," a fully-outfitted space monkey. Tuesduy, Art Linkletler s spe cial featured some monkey stiines and next Saturday, Jack Benny's special again will feature the clever Marquis family of trained chimps. The Gurry Moore show is using the -chimps a little later in the month. Even J. The units will give futhers a chance to smoke their pipes and "recover their equili brium," the council said. BEWARE: AMERICAN LONDON (UPI) The Daily Telegraph today reported that an automobile at Windsor, being driven on Britain's drive-on-the-Ift-hand-side roads, bears a neat metal rear end sign warning: "Caution, American driver." MOTION TABLED .MONROE. MENNINGER TELLS WHY CHICAGO (UPI) - Almost anyone is at least a little bit nuts, psychiatrist William C. Menninger said Friday. Mennin ger. president of the Menninger Foundation, Topeka, Kan., said that's why we usually manage 'to see something queer in the other fellow." WOMAN WANTS REVENGE CORBY. England (UPI I Mi chael Sumpter, a judo club offi cial, said Friday that a woman applied for judo tralnm. -because her husband beats her. She "seems very anxious to deal with him herself." he added, on a New York station. I'm all for this trend. In fact, the thought occurs that if quiz show producers had used mon keys instead of people as contest ants, there probably wouldn't have been so much monkey busi ness in those dear dead days. "The Milton Berle Show, "NBC TV's Sunduy Showcase .special, was a filmed situation comedy with an altempted jewel robbery in Las Vegas. The jewelry was attached to guest star Lucille Ball, who, unfortunately, wasn't given much of a chance to do slapstick. Berle, relatively quiet, handled many of his lines in the George Burns manner this time out. But the final minutes of the show, involving a wild wedding scene, were good for real laughs. Except for this bit and Berle's scene with an old-maid at a wish ing well, things were unusually quiet. Dialing and Filing: Dinah Shore's NBC -TV hour, a nosegay to Paris, offered some superb scenes in color, especially the can-can number. Pantomimist Parcel Marceau, despite some in sensitive camera work, performed magnificently. Eddie Constantine, an American performer who found success in France, made his TV debut here and displayed a pleasant voice along with an Ersatz Chevalier charm. Jack I Benny's Charlie Chan-C h i n e s e laundry-restaurant spoof tuth guest star Jack Webb was suc cessful all the way. Skilled writ ing and acting gave this much used premise new sparkle, many laughs. - The Channel Swim: Alan Neu man, whose TV credits include such, shows as Wide, Wide World, the NBC-TV opera series. Wis dom and Producers' Showcase, succeeds John Aaron and Jesse Zousmer as producer of CBS-TV's Friday night show, Person To Person. Neuman intends to tape shows in England and France be fore the year ends. Also on his agenda: Taped celebrity home visits to Italy and Spain. Viveca Lindfors, who quit the cast of "I, Don Quixote," the Du Pont Show of the Month on CBS TV for Monday, Nov. 9, has been replaced by Colleen Dewhurst. Claude Rains, Charles Ruggles and Kate Smith head the cast in NBC-TV's hour production of Paul Gallico's Christmas fable, "Once Upon A Christmas Time" (orig inally called "The 13th Orphan ) set for Wednesday, Dec. 9. Fred Astair 'In The Wings' This Year For Emmy Running is beginning to subside. ' By VERNON SCOTT UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD (UPP Fred Astaire, who won nine Emmy Awards on his first TV show last year, says he does not expect to win a single statuette this year. "I olwoys try to improve each succeeding movie or program I make," he said. "But I don't be lieve I have much chance to win an Emmy this season. "There are some 3(H) or more so-called 'specials' this year to compete with in addition to the regular programs. I wouldn t be surprised if my show last year in spired so many specials. So in a way I'm responsible for my own competition." Solon Says Congress Should Act Oh Strike MEMPHIS. Tenn. (UPI) Sen. Estes Kefauver suggested Sunday that President Eisenhower call a special session of Congress if the 111-day steel strike isnt settled 'in the next couple of weeks. Purpose of the session, he said, would be passage of a compulsory arbitration law. "Nobody likes compulsory ar bitration," Kefauver said, "but w hen the public interest is so clearly at stake. . .there seems to be no other course." now Fred was criticized for collect ing so many awards, particularly for snagging "best performance by an actor." Ed Sullivan led the complaints, claiming Fred wasn't acting because he was playing himself. When the din reached its height the dandy little dancer offered to ! return the Emmy to stop the up- rar. "I don't want to give it back," he said in his Beverly Hills home. "But I thought my offer would bring on end to all the controver sy. Instead, it increased the furor. "Now I find the whole thing amusing. But from the cries of anguish, you'd have thought I'd solen the thing." New Title Unimaginative Fred's second TV spec Wednes day night (NBC) promises to be more imaginative than its title, "Another Evening With Fred As taire." To begin with, it cost con siderably more. And once' again Fred devoted 12 solid weeks of work to perfecting the hour-long musical revue. "I've seen the completed tape," he went on, "and it's pure torture watching the finished product. I'm highly critical, never satisfied with what I see. I find myself believ ing nothing is quite good enough. Barrie Chase, a wonderful dancer, is back with me again. We've given her more to do. She takes part in four dance numbers this time ar.d we've added a little comedy, too." N Umlt-No Reserve PUBLIC AUCTION To seltls Iht estate of N. C.
