' In this play by S. Lee Pogostin, "People Kill People, Sometimes.-' Geraldine Page and Jason Rq; bards Jr. portrayed a marriage-on-the rocks couple of u ilimited wealth. She was in love with her psychiatrist and living on pills ("people pill people, sometimes") and he was in love with a blonde, played by Nan Martin. The mar riage apparently was cracking up because of mutual disinterest, for gotten tenderness, boredoom and starved egos. The drama comes when a prowl er the outside force enters the house just after Kobards has told his wife he's getting a di vorce. Miss Page shoots Kobards not really by accident, it seems but is acquitted. While free of a prison term in her husband's mur der, she is destroyed by her guilt. Pogostin MM us that each of us shares in the guilt, in the final analysis. This rather sonp-opcra-like story was clothed in some stiff, allegor ical language during the first act. The agonizing, puerile dialogue gave the four principals snobbish, unsympathetic veneers. Samples: "1 want to go out and hang my self on the highest tree." "WTt is a means by which we civilize people." There was a reference to "the book of St. Freud" and some half-hearted chit-chat about de signs, or lack of designs, in lite. Because self-concious, strained repartee sandbagged the first act, later attempts to get solid ground under the characters were to no avail. They started out as unreal types and ended the same way. I want to credit the actors with fine performances, especially Ro bards and Miss Page in the "I want a divorce bedroom scene." Director John Frankenheimer's use of closetips helped make the scene a technical triumph. My disappointment In the pray itself hasn't lessened my enthusi asm tor the potential oi me series, however. This one may well turn into another Playhouse 90. Do we call it Playhouse 607 Friday nights ' NBC-TV . hour. . America pauses in September, followed the usual outdoor fon.iat ; of this seasonal series, but made some careless uses of pre-recorded music and pre-recorded laugh ter. Art Linklettor was an adroit head-patter; Julie London "moved her lips to song again. From the standpoint of originality, tiie best sequence involved closetips of ex otic birds and flowers during Mar tin Dcnnys group's performance. The Channel Swim: Sir Alec Guinness, Ralph Bellamy and Gwen Verdon are the latest addi tions to the one-hour "Tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt" on NBC-TV Sunday, Oct. 25.
