XV YAW T Qbcrvcr, U Grande, Qre., Mon., Aug. 31, 1959 TELEVISION IN REVIEW: Page 6 Sullivan Gives His Army Show Without Our Leader By FRED DANZIG UPI SH Writer NEW YORK il'PH Dialing and filing: Ed Sullivan went ahead with hit 6th annual Army talent show on CBS-TV Sunday night despite a serious handicap: Our Leader, Elvis, was busy else where. But an impressionist, Jack Larson of Ft. Belvoir, Va., made the show legal by impersonating PKC Presley. While the hour was top-heavy with singers, the big gest disappointment was a civilian comedian, Henny Youngman. His "jokes" are ready to be mustered out, having reached the 30-year mark. Tennis, anyone? The Davis Cup tennis matches from Forest Hills. N.Y., disrupted NBC-TVt Sunday schedufe as Meet The Press, Chet Huntley Reporting and Midwest ern Hayride were pre-empted to accommodate the extra " long matches between Australia and the U.S. Camera work during the Saturday and Sunday TV cover age was discreet and followed a sensible pattern: During action the full court was pictured; close ups were reserved for the no-ac. tion spots. Jack Kramer and Billy Talbcrt, who shared the commen tary, sometimes were guilty of too much "expertising" and si multaneous talking, to the view er's distraction. Incidentally, aft er Alex Olmedo defeated Aussie Hod Laver on Sunday, Ted Schroeder broke into Billy Tal bert's interview with Alex to ask it the remarks could be shared by his radio listeners in Australia. When permission was granted, Schroeder delivered his congratu lations to Olmedo and walked off. Australian listeners are probably waiting to, hear Olmedo say a few words. On NBC-TV Friday, the razor blade sponsor of the bruising Car men Basilio-Gene Fullrrfer fight looked a little too, sharp. They nicked some of the action in or der to run commercials. Tab Hunter appeared on Dick Clark's ABC-TV show Saturday night to lip-synch his latest rec ord and even his acting talent hide his embarrassment over the silliness of it all. NBC and CBS presented the second parts of their running cov erage of President Eisenhower's visit to Europe tin Saturday and Sunday nights, respectively. NBC's hour-long news special grew . duller and duller as one speaker after another agreed with the last. The CBS half-hour of fered fine videotapes of the Pres ident in London and Scotland, plus some meaningful commen tary. The Channel Swim: NBC-TV will carry a salute to the Eleanor Roosevelt Cancer Research Insti tute at Denver on Sunday. Oct. 25. Participating will be stars of the entertainment world and a number of world leaders. The in stitute was launched this year as part of Mrs. Roosevelt's 75th birthday observance. Mike Nichols and Elaine May have bowed out of their scheduled NBC-TV Nov. 21 special following a disagreement with producer Joe Cates over format. They'll appear on a Goodman Ace-produced CBS TV ' special Thursday, Dec. S Thelma Ritter and Eddie Albert join Phil Silvers in the CBS-TV musical comedy special, "The Ballad of Louie the Louse," Sat urday, Oct. 17. Arthur Godfrey worked in a TV studio for the first time since his taped portions of his CBS-TV Sept. 16 special in New York this past week end. Joseph N. Welch, noted Boston lawyer-actor, will be featured in a series of " five-minute talks called, "Message for Americans" on TV next season. The talks will be part of the Ford-sponsored music shows that feature Leonard Bernstein and the New York Phil harmonic performing on video tape in Moscow, Paris, Venice and Puerto Rico. Dr. Thomas Dooley, the cancer stricken American who has oper ated a medical unit in Laos, will be one of the subjects of ABC TV's documentary, "The Splendid American," on Sunday, Sept. 27. Pat Boone's hour-long ABC-TV special on Thursday. Oct. 1 will offer Nat Cole, Fabian. Jack E. Leonard and Gogi Grant. LEGAL, NOTICI COUNTY COURT PROCEEDINGS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY Ore. The subcommittee had subpoen aed more than 100 teachers last June for hearings to be held on the West Coast. However, the hearings were cancelled Aug. 21. The subcommittee said material about the teachers would be turned over to local agencies. The injunction, sought by Irma M. Tuominen. of South San Fran cisco, and Evelyn Schoenfeld, of Berkeley, named subcommittee in vestigator William Wheeler as the defendant. The complaint said the resolu tion creating the committee did not give it the power to distribute the information.' The sole purpose oi giving uaia to local boards would be to disgrace the teach ers and cause them to be fired, it said.
