' Credit Unions Growing At Rapid Rate In U.S. By ELMER C. WALZER 1 UPI Staff Writer NEW YORK (UPI) Credit unions, according to Alexander Hamilton Institute, are growing at a faster rate than any other financial institution in the nation. These do-it-yourself institutions might be compared to banking somewhat as investment clubs are to the stock market. There's one difference. Bankers aren't too fond of them. The stock market loves the investment clubs. The two groups are thrift in stitutions and each is growing rapidly in scope and in the money invested. l' 11 Million Customers There are some 20,000 credit unions in the nation with a mem bership aggregating 11 million persons. Their assets total $4.4 billion. They have $3.1 billion of loans outstanding. Membership averages 550 persons. These unions pay. 4 per cent interest on deposits and charge one per cent a month on the un paid balance on - loans. ' A credit union Is described as a group of people organized in to a sort of bank to save their money together and make loans to each other at low interest Federal Funds J Due Oregon For Conference Aid WASHINGTON UPI As a fi nancial aid to participation in the 1961 White House Conference on Aging, Oregon will receive $15,000 in federal funds. Sen. Richard Neuberger D Ore.) announced Sunday. The senator said he had been nrlvicpH hv the DeDartment of Health, : Education and Welfare I, mat Oregon was one oi me nrsi 15 states whose applications were approved. Neuberger said the conference, along with studies now being car ried out by a Senate subcommit tee,, could serve as the basis for establishing "a comprehensive ap proach to. the problems created by the percentage population in crease in older persons." He said the major problem fac ing older persons is medical care. He cited figures showing that per sons 65 and older use more than twice as much hospital care as those under 65, but that 65 per cent of the aged do not have hos pital insurance. Jury Is Probing Roseburg Blast ROSEBURG (UPI District Attorney ,. Avery Thompson said the Douglas county grand jury would resume its investigation to day into the Aug. 7 truck explo sion and fire here that claimed 13 lives and wrecked an eight-block downtown area. The grand jury started Its probe last Wednesday and has taken testimony from about seven per sons so far,' he said. ' Death toll in the explosion rose to 13 Saturday when Mrs. Alvin Kuykendall died from injuries. Her daughter, Virginia Lee, 4. died in the hospital earlier and her husband and another daugh ter, Janet, still were hospitalized. BULL'S CORE 10 MADRID (UPD Spanish killer bulls sent 10 bullfighters to hos pitals in Madrid, Valencia, Alge cirsa and Bilbao Sunday. The new gorings brought to 25 the num ber of bullfighters injured in the past three weeks. perature and humidity levels, am! promptness . in handling Eggs handled according to these requirements and meeting the quality standards proposed will be eligible for either the "U.S. grade AA" label or the new "fresh fancy quality'' grade label designation. Eggs meeting the standards for "A quality" also may be identified as having been produced under the quality con- Jtjf - I Li v rates. Loans include those for auto purchases, home moderniza tion, and the like. The unions are subject to reg ulations and must maintain re serves. In their ' formation they must obtain charters. They main tain their own insurance for members mutual insurance so cietywhich has $4 2. billion of insurance in force. The Alexander Hamilton Insti tute made a study of these tin- ions. It found their history dates back to 1849 when they were first organized In Germany. The institute found that a French-Canadian legislative re porter, Alphonse Desjardin, be came Interested in the European experiment and alter a long pe riod organized the first credit union In North-America at Levis, Quebec, in 1900. In 1906, the Que bee Legislature passed the first credit union' law in the Western Hemisphere. ,r : ;, DesjardinS helped to form 'the first credit union in the U.S. in Manchester, N.H., in 1909. U.S. Dlopmnf. Meantime, Edw.ard.A,, Filene, Boston department store . owner and philanthropist, came into contact with credit unions in India. He gave around a million dollars to further the idea in the United States. The United States ' Federal Credit Union Act was passed in 1934. By that time legislative ap proval of credit unions had been attained in 39 states. , Today, the Alexander Hamilton Institute estimates, the 20,000 credit unions serve better than six per cent of the U.S. popula tions, almost a third have been organized by employes of manu facturing companies, independent of labor affiliations. Government employes have or ganized 19 per cent of the total and another 10 per cent has been formed by employes in transpor tation or utility services. Church groups, teachers and school main tenance employes, labor union locals, and employes of whole sale and retail establishments complete the membership picture. ... In Europe, food bills range from 27 per. cent oT income in Denmark to 46 per cent in Italy. This week's purchases bring to 10,25,250 pounds the amount of drfed eggs purchased sine the beginning of the program April 24.' The department has paid a total oi $ll,635,OJ for the eggs. The Agriculture Department said all major producing states show sharp drops in acreage for harvest from last year. The losses range from 10 per cent in Illinois to 60 per cent in Iowa. Indiana is the leading popcorn state with 26,900 acres for . har vest. Then come Illinois with 26,000 acres, Iowa, 18,800, and Kentucky, 15.100. " WASHINGTON UPD Interest rates on certain Farm Home Ad ministration loans will jump from 4Mi to 5 per cent on Sept. 1. The Agriculture Department said the higher rate would apply to farm ownership loans and soil and water conservation loans to individuals. The department explained that the new rate would be more in line with interest on farm mort gage credit from other sources. WASHINGTON (UPI) The Agriculture Department refused today to make any comment on a move by a group of midwest farmers to bold food off the mar ket to force up prices. Some 2,000 farmers from Mis souri, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Neb raska, Colorado and Indiana voted recently to withhold grain, soy beans, meat and dairy products. They'll probably try holding back hogs first. - , La Grande Observer Established 1896 Entered u Second Olau Matter at Uie Poat orrtee r La Orande. Oreau Under We i ct of March s.
