OLterver, La Grande, Ore, Wagons Camp Near Durkee For Weekend HUNTINGTON. U:e. a I'll The weekend destination of the Oregon Centennial wagon caravan is the Verdell Kirbv ranch a mile north of Durkee on lliuliwajrao. The cavalcade passed through beautiful scenery Friday as the rumbling wagons negutialed a sleep downgrade with wiigoucers riding the brakes to hold back Ihe groaning wagons. The caravan stayed overnight at Huntington's public school g unnels. The campsite was a disujMiiiil ment to Kastvrn Oregon ranc her Dwight l-ockett. who had uttered his ranch live miles east ol Hunt ington as tin overnight campsite, l-ockett had offered to guide the , modern pioneers over the back country' from the Thursday nigbt campsite. I.ockctt's ranch is shoaled on the Old Oregon Trail where ves tiges of the trail are -still visible. Citizens of Huntington planned a politick dinner for the crew of the Conestoga train followed by entertainment. Rodeo Oocen In Train Another member of the l-ockett family became a part of the cara van. Darlene. comely daughter of 1-ockell, and queen of the Weiser Kodeo, rode along with Ihe scouts. Friday's run took the wagons over the old military road through spectacular scenery. Mrs. Rudy Houdebaugh said, "We could real ly enjoy Oregon's scenery lor the first lime as we are going slow enough." The wagons rumble along at about lour miles per hour. Manners oi me nam auueii that the road into Huntington de scendod over the longest grade encountered so far on the trek. A drop of several hundred feet over a two - mile stretch forced the wagoneers to hold back the horses and mules pulling the wagons. 'Disappointed' Killer Dies At Sing Sing . OSSIMNG, N.
