By FRED DANZIG UPI Staff Writer NEW YORK i UPI i Some day we'll see a realistic drama about the fight game in which a fight er's girl friend will rush to the locker room and a cop will, tell her she can't go in. And she'll stay out. In CBS-TV's Desilti Playhouse drama called "Killer Instinct" Monday night, there was no such luck. The girl, played by Janice Rule, spent so much time in the locker rooms that I thought she was training for next Friday night's fight on NBC. Her rea.-oii fur loitering in lock er rooms: Rory Calhoun, a fight-cr-turiHHl-manaj'er, wants to mar ry her but he's such a mixed-up tyrant with a mother-fixation that she decides to sample the line of fered by Calhoun's young protege, played by Michael ' Dante. Fir & Jefferson WO 3-3113 There is the inevitable fight in that square circle, as we say between Calhoun and Dante. Of course, Calhoun could kayo the lad but, like a good manager, whispers advice and carries him to a decision. After winning, Cal houn again reverts, to the man ager and patches up the cuts he inflicted upon Dante's outside while Miss Rule floats into the locker room from her neutral cor ner to smile benignly upon both men and heal their internal wounds. . . -. The play, very loosely based on a true story, was dull. Calhoun played it in a melancholy, mopish manner. Dante was appropriately wild-eyed and animal-like, while Miss Rule was lovely and sad. Bert Freed, as a big-time man ager, said things like: "You've gut yourself a boy. there" through clenched lips. Yet, despite its mediocrity, the play was notable for one thing. Director La.nont Johnson didn't make use of a single flashback. The Cha.inci Swim: Former President Harry Truman is said to have agreed to appear on Jack Benny's tall season premiere. Sunday night. Sept. 27 on CBS TV. Kenny, who will do three spe cials next season in addition to his alternate-week half-hour, has lined up Danny Thomas as the guest siar for a one-hour CBS TV siecial on Saturday. Nov. 7. Penny Parker, an 18-year-old singe -actress, steps into the role of Terry, formerly played by Sherry Jackson, on the Danny Thomas show next fall. Irgrid , Bergman, ' making her TV dramatic debut on NBC-TV's Tuesday night series of specials . 'sponsored by Fori), will tape the iMl-minute adaptation of Hem-y James' story, "A Turn of the Screw" in New York this Septem ber. John Frankenheimcr is di recting for Htibbell Robinson Pro ductions, Inc., which is packaging the series. Robinson also has announced plans lor presenting the Russ Co lombo story, starring Tony Curtis as the popular crooner who was killed in 1934. There's a chance Gary Crosby will appear in this one-hour filmed presentation play ing the part of his famous dad. In addition, a number of well known singers and band leaders of the Colombo era may appear as themselves in the show. Vice President Richard M. Nix on will appear in a special NBC TV program to report on his trip to the Soviet Union soon after his return next month. Lauren Bacall may be the hostess in the second CBS-TV daytime special presenta tion of woman! The theme: Is the American woman losing her femininity?
