Carlot Shipments Of Fruit 4,631 C.T'lot shipments of fruits and vegetables from the Pacific Northwest amounted to 4,631 cars during Ihe week ending Oct. 0. Loadings included 1,684 cars of pota.cos, 1,132 of apples, 920 of pears, 492 of onions, 157 of let tuce and smaller shipments of carrots, prunes, celery and other items. Oicgon shipped 1,102 cars dur ing the week, including E25 of pears, 268 of potatoes, 200 of on ions, 57 cars of lettuce, 18 of celeiy, 9 of beets, 8 of apples, 7 of preen corn and 2 cars of cab bage. The potato market turned weaker the past week. Price de clincs occurred at shipping point and terminal markets. At Port land, Monday, Deschutes and Klamath gems sold to retailers at $2.85 to $3, about 35 cents un der a week previous. With the exception of apples. supplies of most fresh fruits will be as larger or larger than last fall. The light apple crop in east tin slates -this year makes it necessary that a large proportion of government requirements be obtained from Oiegon and Wash ington. The Oregon and Wash ington crop is estimated to be about 93 percent of average. tlay Market Quiet; Plenty of Feed The hay market at Portland was very auiet during the week ending Oct. 9. Fall pastures are furnishing considerable' feed t as the result of recent rains and availability of home and locally giown fi.eds and forage have les sened the nred for hay from out side areas. Loveless 26, Dies; III Briefly Twenty-six-year -old Thomi Oren Loveless of 2909 North Third street died yesterday at a local hospital after only a short Illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 13 In Snodgrass Funeral home with Rev. Glen Ballard of Elgin of ficiating. Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery. Loveless was born Feb. 23, 1919 in Oklahoma and had lived in La Grande for 23 years. He is sur vived by his father, C. E. Love less of La Grande, a sister, Mrs. J. J. Utility shares responded to an ticipation of benefits from a tax reduction. Their average reached a new high since Feb. 18, 1937. Large blocks of the various is sues appeared on the tickers in the afternoon. Low-priced issues were heavily traded around the previous closing levels. Prefer red issues were strong.
