Bob bought a station-waeon, and together he and Carolyn " drove the boxed X-999 through the canyons to Blair, thence branched onto the rougher trail that led to the abandoned Copper King mine in Tonto Mountain. . There they were met by Bob's workmen, who alreudy had re conditioned the narrow gauge ore track into the mine shaft. When the X-999 had at last ' ' been deposited nearly three-quarters of a mile inside the mountain Itself, Bob showed visiblo relief. "Now, for the first lime, I can breathe easily," said he. Caroly telephoned her mother, and Mrs. Tyler had packed their ''.trunks and per3onal cllects to fol low west. - When she arrived, they decided " to take her into partial conlldence, explaining that the "chemical sub stance" was hidden in the oban- doncd Copper King Mine shaft only because It was valuable und .,' "dangerous to persons who wouldn't handle It properly." They did nU tell her just how " terrifically great it was in cx ' plosive power, lost she bo uneasy. ' , "It is a mighty big mountain for " a laboratory." Mrs. Tyler ga.ed at Tonto Peak In awe. Dr. Hale nodded. "About HOOO feet Odd formation, really. Note the bald, perpendicular spot on . top that's a granito face. Left half the mountain, seen from here, is nlmost solid rock. Other half, , you'll note, had up-ended strata, loose shale and all manner of stuff. There arc several beautiful l: old trails, Mrs. Tyler. I shall order a very gentle horse for you." She couldn't blame her impressionable daughter for being a little bit "fooush" about such a man. - 1VTEANTIME, Carolyn jtnew, Lc ana ,Sorm( was a lurking, In sidious danger. She "knew" it largely through intuition, but it was deflnito even so. Lcana's eye3 had revealed It. Lea nil's way of looking at Bob. The little things Leana hail lei slip back home. The peculiar cir cumstance of that first explosion, the hint contained in the telegram to Leana, and the fact that a train was robbed! They all added up too much to be mere coincidence. 'I've been terrifically lucky," Carolyn whispered to herself, in apprehension again. fane s not. likely to miss any bets next time!" Leanu had been brought to tne mountain retreat, Carolyn knew, because there was a great work facing her and Bob harnessing X-DDB, adapting its unprecedented power to engines, inviting omer distinguished scientists hero for consultation, remaking the whole world of engineering! But Carolyn knew that some where in this rush Leana Sormi would strike again. And soon! A WHOLE new settlement had been constructed half a mile from the granite side of Tonto Peak and partly screened from Tonto by a lesser hill, which Caro lyn named Tonto, Jr. An electric power line from Boulder Dam had been tapped to supply the Im promptu village, and telephone lines had been extended from Blatr. Even comfortable guest cabins had been built and were put to use when Dr. Merrlvale and Dr. Canby came by invitation from the Massachusetts Institute of O Washington Merry-Go-Round Continued From Pago 2 Despite Carol's one-lime link with the iion guard in fascist llu m a n i a, the Soviets apparently think he will play their game. Just as he was about to leave Hiti, however, the British pounc ed on t h i! Pnrlugue.sc govern ment unci got Hum to withdraw Carol's visa. Without a Portu guese visa, he can't get back to Europe. Tip-off on the nature nf the Rumanian government: Carol's fascist former p r I in e minister, George' Taliuescu. who was on tlti! Humaniaii war criminals list, is now foreign minister with sov iet blessing. 1 Tip-off on the close relations between King Carol and Moscow: Cigarets containing pictures of Carol have been distributed to lUtinanian soldiers in Russia. Still others would soon be ar riving, Carolyn knew, for Bob and Leana were gathering here the best technical brains in America. Moreover, the experimenters actually had assembled and de veloped one engine that functioned with a minute speck of the X- for power source, less than two months after the arrival of the crew in Arizona. . . "It is unbelievablel" old Dr. O'Mara cried. 'But it works!" shot back prac tical Devereaux, an automobile and airplane manufacturer. "I don't need to tell you people that this - will revolutionize all the world's engineering." THAT was true, too true for n-.net nf 4hnm In Drndn ftvpnnf in piecemeal. As for Carolyn, she lived in a constant state of sus pense and restrained excitement a condition most pleasant for any vivacious person. She acquired it through her employment, - which was a steady (hence delightful) intimacy with Bob Hale.. Through her he recorded every move tho experimenters made. That very intimacy with- Bob, however, was observed day by day by Leana Sormi. And Carolyn knew it. Realization of Leanas jealousy kept alive the only flaw in an otherwise perfect existence here. She felt that Leana Sormi was secretly raging. As indeed sho was. But It was not until an evening; when most of the new village per sonnel had mot for dinner together in the largest house, and Bob and Carolyn had relaxed so as to laugh heartily like the young people they were and had even danced twice to radio music, that Leana felt her restraint again give away. That night she sat until well past 1 o clock, crystallizing a brand-new plan. It was auda cious, yet so perfect she could see no possibility of failure. It could give her everything she wanted and it could be effected at once. (To Be Continued).
