Maoske, president of the college, that a central iied school of nursing might be established at the colege in affiliation with ine various hos pitals in eastern Oregon area. The establishment of the U. S. cadet nurse corps made pos sible the realization of this dream and it is hoped this pre nursing program will continue on a civilian basis after discon tinuance of the corps. .Thus far, four classes of nurses have recolved their pre cadet training on this campus. two groups going to The Dallon hospital, one to St. Elizabeth hospital in Baker, and one to Deaconness hospital in Spokano. Two more classes will completo ihoir trainiig at Christmas lime and will go to St. Anthony hos pital in Pendleton and to St. t.lizaboih hcncita1,. Additional classes for The Dalles, Baker, and Pendleton are beginning their training this fall. The cadet nurse corps , has helped msleriai'jr in keeping uo the enrollment at the college thus making it unnecessary for any instructors to look eko wheer for leaching positions. Home Service lined By All H ranches Mrs Ray Williams heads the local home service department of the American Red Cross which is used by all branches of the mil iary as a verifying agency in nil casus of emergency leaves. The Red Cross is not pel mil ted by the military to request a leave or furlough, but is always called upon to transmit to the military the home conditions or existing circumstances. I Home service gives counsel and aiu 10 cuscnargea men ana wom en concerning matters pertaining to hospitalization, claims for pen sions, rehabilitation and educa tion. An American Red Cross field director is stationed at each veteran's administration facility. Game, All Sorts Do you like to hunt? Just name your choice, big game, upland game birds, or waterfowl. They're most of them here. Do you like to fish? Many spe cies of game fish arc found in the certainly unsurpassed streams and lakes of Wallowa and Union counties. Do you want to climb moun tains? The ranges arc all around us. Do. you want to ski, or sleigh, or take part in other winter sports? The facilities are cer tainly here. Summer sports? Emily game refuge, in Ladd canyon, Catherine creek, upper Grande Ronde river, Tollgate, Mt. Har ris, and Minam areas mule deer abound. Bull elk are found in all the pine, fir and larch cov ered hills. Upland Birds Then there is the Imnnha country, t h e Buckhorn, Sledge springs and Grossman areas and the Chesnimnus valley. The Wo naha stream area also will show many deer and elk. Though they are not always classed as "game" animals, there are and probably will be for a long time, plenty of bear, wild cats, cougars and coyotes. Hunt ing is still hunting in the moun tains ot Union and Wallowa counties. Ring- necked pheasants and Hungarian partridges are found in all the valleys, they are easily flushed in t h e high valley be tween Union and Cove. ' . Ducks, Geese i f'Shool 'nothing but green beads," was long a slogan for duck hunters in the slews, marsh es raid ponds in Union county and on Wallowa lake and in the Crow creek country, for the best of all ducks, the mallard, outnumbers bthers by six or eight to one. These birds are far enough in land so they do not take on the "fishy" attributes some birds do elsewhere. They are grain fed, what with wheat, peas and ber ries, and have an extra savory flavor. They stay all winters in the sheltered nooks, where the extreme rigors of cold weather arc unknown. If you don't like the thrill of a singing reel; if you would rather the fish didn't disturb your lure and therefore your mediations or your .slumber, you had better stay away from this part of the world. There are fish in the streams here and Union ! and Wallowa counties have fish-. ing streams equal to almost any thing found anywhere else. Of course, if you go fishing just to look at the sky. the trees, the mountains and the river, you'll find all those, too, and in ahuit- danco. In fact, there is almost, no - kind of scenery you can't find, except, of course, the beaches of a salt ocean. . The kind of fish? All kinds. . Well, to start with, there are mountain trout in most of the streams of Wallowa and Union counties. In many you will find Dolly. Varden or bull trout; there are the stcelhead, also; or the rainbow; or there are catfish (bullheads), bass, perch. Chinook salmon, blue salmon, eastern brook trout and even whitefish. So it's riding you want? Just ! arrange for guides and horses for ! a pack trip in the Minam coun try; or into the South fork. Wal lowa and Lost ine countries. There j are plenty of place where you ca:i get just as close to natuiv as you i want to, in all those areas. There ' are "dude" ranches at I.apover, ; near Justice Douglas' summer I home. ! Summer Sports I For summer sports there are those to be found on the Wallowa and Grande lakes and on the Anthony lakes. Swimming, boat ing, sailin gand fishing are in viting on these high lakes. When it comes, winter time, there are the ski courses at An thony, Kamela, Menrhem a n d Tollgate. There is also sleighing and skating. The gun club has one of the finr.t layouts in this part of the United States for trap shooting, with four traps for sportsmen who like the thrill of btvaking 'em. There is also a rifle range for rifle clubs. 0 Golfers will find the nine hole course at the eountry club is one of the best nine hole l.iyouts it; the Pacific Northwest.
