He fllen neat to look over the irrouud CIX days after he left, Bob tele- phoned. It was late afternoon. "Carolynl" he cried exultantly, over long distance. "I have found just the spot. I've already started work on it. Have you been all right? I wish I had brought you with me to help with the Well, anyway, I shall catch a plane out of here tonight. We'll ship the stuff by train. That'll be let's see about 14 hours from now I can be home again and " Carolyn was astonished at the feeling of elation that came over her when ho told her was on the way back. A man expects his secre tary to be efficient, and if Bob wanted to transfer everything westward as soon as possible Head up, Carolyn went straight way to Leana Sormi, to inform her courteously thot preparations for moving the priceless X-099 were alreody under way. ;rpVO days later Leana went to Bob's office. Carolyn, anxious to escape the unavoidable eaves dropping, or nterfering in uny way, found .-xcuses to tay away from her desk. In characteristic bluntness, Le ana drove straight to her point. "Robert, now that you have re turned to actual work, she env phasized the last two words al most bitterly "perhaps you will be so good to tell me the plans you have. made." The thrust escaped his notice. In truth, Leana was not so much concerned over the future of X 099 as she was of the fact that Bob had returned from the west yesterday afternoon, and had, to Leana's astonishment, token Caro lyn to dinner. "Right, Leana! I was going to send for you. Or come to your office." Dr. Hale, although supe rior here, had always tacitly placed Miss Sormi in a position of virtual partnership and equality in their laboratory work. She hod come to expect it. "As a matter of fact," he went on, "Carolyn has made most of the arrangements already. She is to " "Indeed! The matter was taken right out of my hands." Her asperity caught his atten tion. He looked up ot her In sur prise. "But, Leana, she why not? Carolyn is to be compli mented. For efficiency She had already ordered a freight car when I arrived home, had the exact train schedule on my desk. She hod anticipated my reasoning that a freight car offers the best and safest transport, "Corolyn arranged to load the cur at the Meyer switch, only hulf a mile from hero. The lead con tainers will be cast and ready by 0 or 7 o'clock tonight. The girl is priceless." "The danger Is enormous," said she coldly. "Unavoidably." He nodded agreement. "Which is all the mora reason for getting our job done with dispatch. Carolyn has some good ideas about packing, too. Look, she suggests if ordinary coil springs be mounted on all sides of the padded containers, and they in turn padded again outside, there is practically no possibility of shock no matter how rough the trip moy be. As you know, ordinary shock should not disturb X-999 anyway. Only heat or a percussion cop might do 11. And yet, that first effort!" Ho recalled the explosion, wnicn still baffled him. "For getting it to the train, Carolyn agrees that" pAROLYN! Carolyn! Corolyn! Robert seemed full of her name. Leana's lips tightened, worked in and out nervously. She was shrewd enough to soy no more, though, lest she reveal something of the deep resentment she felt. The Tyler girl hod no place here, no right! She was an Intruder. Whot hod "efficiency" to do with it? Any child could charter a freight car, suggest a packing case. Leana left Bob Hole's omce, os tensibly to go to the laboratory. Actually she was tense with anger. unreasonable but real. She had expected him to spend all of last evening with her here In the laboratory and when he hadn't come at 10 o'clock she had in vestigated, only to learn that he was dining and dancing again. Fury over that Leana neld it to be acute neglect of duty on Bob's part rather than any Jeal ousy of her own caused her to go sleepless most of the night. The next morning she did not . go !o the laboratory. She went to her own office Instead, carefully locking the door; sat at her desk to stare otr at nothing.
