It was to have been held Sunday ut Riverside park and has been cancelled be cause of the death of Garfield Simmons. SIMMONS RITES The body of Garfield Simmons will lie in State at ,the Snodgrass funeral home Saturday morning and again after',3 p. m. Saturday. The body will be taken to Portland Saturday night for private funer al services at 10 a. m. Monday at the Portland Mausoleum. Sim mons was found dead Thursday morning 'at Kamela. Born in Combs, Arte,, in 1889, he had lived in La Grande' 35 years and had been worfyng'all that time for the Union Pacific Railroad company. VISITS SEED CROPS E. R. Salem Tow Car Driveidkilled .!,- SALEM, Aug. 17 (UP) Ray mond Howard Stenberg, 34, Port land, w killed instantly last evening when a tow-car he was driving vyis hurled over an em bahkment'by the weight of a log ging truck . it had in tow. The accidentl occurred at the Battle creek embankment three miles south ott&re. Nunn was treated in a Salem hospital for shock and released. Lend Lease Loading Continues in Ports PORTLAND, Aug. 17 (UP) Until further instructions are re ceived from Washington, loading of lend-lease material on Russian ships in the port of Portland will continue, George Powell, assist ant Pacific coast director of the war shiprping administration, de clared today.. Powell sad the longshore gangs are beinE ordered to resume load ing most ol the Russian ships in the harbor today, after a two-day victory (holiday, in spite of an announcement' by Leo Crowley, foreign economic administrator, that lencttease projects will be closed as sbon as possible. "We'll continue operations un til Washington advises us other wise." Powell said. The majority of Russian lend-lease cargo han dled in Portland is strictly mili tary equipment. OPA Says 'Keep . Rationing Stamps To Get Tires' " WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 (UP) The office of price administra tion said today consumers shouidn't throw away their gaso line ration books and the green stamps in their food ration books. While no longer needed for buying gasoline, those A, B and C books still will be of help to motorists wanting tires. A new system of tire rationing, based on occupational drivinb re quirements rather than type of gasoline ration book held by the motorist, has gone into effect. As for the green stamps in ra tion book four, you had better hang on because these are the future meat rationing stamps. The green stamp originally was intended . to replace the blue stamp. No more ration books will be printed. OPA advised that air plane stamps for buying shoes also be wisely used until it Is de termined how long shoe ration ing will continue. Other war-end developments of the home front; ' Two-pants suits and vests with double-breasted suits appeared definitely slated. Since winter clothing already is headed for re tail stores, the first peacetime suits probably will be for spring. Nylon hosiery production will start soon, now military require ments for nylon are down to practically nothing. OPA says don't look for re moval of any more rationing con trols "for several weeks." Markets Weakness in Rail Shares Hits Market NEW YORK,, Aug. 17 (UP) Weakness in railroad shares turn ed the stock market lower today after an initial show of strength. Trading picked up and topped the million-share level. Rails were under pressure at the start of dealings but met the heaviest selling after Santa Fe had hit 80 for a net loss nearly 7 points. Other sections of the list re sponded bullishly at first but im mediately after mid-day began to sell off as rails accelerated their decline. Chemicals offered resistance to the late trend, scor ing gains ranging to more than a point in allied. PORTLAND " - LIVESTOCK PORTLAND, Aug. 17 (UP). Cattle, salable 65. calves 75, mar ket slow, due mainly to shorten ed slaughter week; only scattered sales made today, few cleanup sales late Thursday, as much as 25 to 50 cents lower, odd common to medium heifers today $10.00 12.00; few medium vealers steady at $12.00-13.00; good to choice vealers, held at $14.00-14.50; one carload unsold. Hoes, salable none, total 125, market nominal, ' barrows and gilts salable $15.75, sows $15.00.
