Meanwhile, Mildred, seeing Corliss In the b.g., dashes into the hall and the two girls go into a frenzied huddle. MRS. ARCHER: (to Mrs. Prln gle) How dare you come here! MRS. PRINGLE: But, Janet, don't you realize that MILDRED: (simultaneously in the b.g.) I got a coble from Lenny and now they all know everything! CORLISS: (excitedly) Oh golly how wonderful! EXT. ARCHER GARDEN NIGHT Archer has chased Prlnglo behind a tree which afTords some measure of protection, Raymond stands by watching, fascinated. MR. PRINGLE: (yelling) If you 11 stop acting like a maniac, Harry, I'll show you this cable and At this moment, cautiously cir cling the tree, Prlngle trips over a coil of garden hose and sprawls clumsily on the ground. EXT. GARDEN REVERSE SHOT The prostrate Prlngle Is In the f.g. His dilemma is concculcd by th tree from Mrs. Prlngle who, In the b.g., is standing at the screen door with Mrs. Archer. MRS. PRINGLE: Raymond, get me that telegram. Raymond grabs tho telegram from his father's hand and skates over to the porch with it. CLOSE SHOT PRINGLE AND ARCHER Archer stands panting over his prostrato enemy. Printflo raises Red Apple! himself on his elbows. In the excitement he doesn't realize that ho no longer has the telegram. He waves an empty list (n front of Archer. MR. PRINGLE: If you'll Just read this cable, you'll realize that your son and my daughter are marrtedl MR. ARCHER: What! What cable? MR. PRINGLE: (yelling) Ray mond! EXT. PORCH Corliss, Mildred, and the two mothers are in a semi-hysterical mob the truth having obviously been divulged to everyone. FRANTIC AD LIBS: Why didn't you tell us? Those crazy kids! Isn't it ali wonderful? Etc. INT. LOWER HALL Raymond has brought the tele gram to Uncle George, Dexter, and Louise, who are finally get ting the low-down. Uncle Goorge and Louise are elated. Dexter, to whom it is no surprise, of course, is extremely depressed. Over this shot wo hear the faint, excited ad libs of the two girls and their mothers. We also hear Prlngle. MR. PRINGLE: (o.s. bellow ing) Raymond Where's that cable? EXT. PORCH Archer and Prlnglo ore tearing back onto the porch. Archer grabs tho cable from Raymond, who skates towards thorn gracefully. Whilo Archer reads it breath lessly, Raymond watches him blandly, MR. ARCHER: (proudly) That boy! Brings down threo Zoro9 and hasn't got tho nerve to tell us he's married! RAYMOND: (Indulgently) Hl ya, Grandapopt Archer makes an Involuntary movement to strangle tho child, but reluctantly restrains himself. MR. AHCHEfl: (groaning) Foi the lovo of heaven I'm related to youl . ' ; REVERSE SHOT Archer and Prlngle come Into the hall where the proud and recon ciled parents are joined by Uncle Georgo and Louise. It is an ex cited group. , Only Dexter Is apart from thj others. He mooches down the hall towards the porch dejectedly. EXT. PORCH CLOSE SHOT Dexter rmjely glances around as Corliss, deynthlng herself from tho others, co:ms bouncing happily onto the purch. CORLISS!: Oh, Dexter! . Isn't it all too wonderful for words? DEXTER: (bitterly) They're not going to Jet us get married now, you dope! CORLISS: Oh, don't be a goon. I mean about , Mildred and Lenny their having a baby and everything. DEXTER: with no enthusiasm whatsoever) Uh-huh. .' . Mrs. Archer comes onto the porch, radiant with happiness. She Jooks at the two kid;, shaking her head. MRS. ARCHER: And as for you two sweet, irazy, quixotic little Idiots I oujht to fank you bothl CORLISS: (smugly) Well, golly, I swore in bltotl not to telL (with a nmuif smile) I thought we put on a pretty good act, didn't you, Mum? , CLOSE SHOT CORLISS. MRH. ARCHER AND 2EXTER Mrs. Archer has one arm around Corliss, and with her froo hand she is patting Dcxtcr's check af fectionately. MRS.
