Green, Markets Churchill Failure Brings Break In Stock Market NEW YORK, July 26 (UP) Stocks broke sharply today fol lowing news of the overwhelm ing defeat of the Churchill gov ernment. Trading picked up on the de cline which reduced values by fi actions to more than 3 points in most issues traded. The de cline got under way slowly and accelerated as the session pro gressed. Leaders wert making new lows for the day at closing time. Wall Street did not believe the lcbor victory in Britain would affect British foreign policy but It feared a sharp trend to the left thee with government netry into business. Accompanying the Brit ish election news were further reports in the street that the Jap anese war was in its last quar ter and this helped the selling along. STOP LABOR RECRUITING PORTLAND, July 26 (UP) Regional officials of the United States department of agriculture's office of labor pondered an order today asking that all recruiting of Mexican nationals for work in United States harvest fields be stopped. Judge of the Circuit Court of the State of Oregon for Union County dated and entered this 23rd day of July, 1945, and by said Order it is directed that this Summons be published In the La Grande Evening Observer once each week for four (4) con secutive weeks, and the date of the first publication hereof is July 26th, 1945. DIXON & BURLEIGH, Attorneys for Plaintiffs, Residing at La Grande, Oregon July 26 - Aug. 2-0-16 KNDED WHISKfY -Vr-enlfy Churchill Cabinet Badly Beaten As Laborites Win (Continued from Page 1 they had not seen Churchill all day and that there was no chance that he would make a personal appearance. But the crowd did not budge. The defeat suffered by Chur chill and his caretaker govern ment was one of the worst in British history. Eleven of the 15 members of the cabinet were voted out of office. Production Minister Oliver Lyttelton sur vived. 1 The fate of Col. J. J. Llewel lin, minister of food, and of Sir John Anderson, chancellor of the exchequer, still is uncertain. City Stunned The electoral results . stunned the City London's equivalent of Wall Street. Trading on the stock exchange was at a stand, a narrow Churchill victory but were not prepared for a sweep by the labor party whose pro gram is frankly socialistic and which demands thee nationaliza tion of some of Britain's key in dustries. The labor sweep carried not only its strongholds in the Welsh mining country and the indus trial cities of the Midlands but also the great residential sub urbs of London and thee rural areas which have been conserva tive for generations. The con servative victories, generally, oc curred In district where tho opposition was split. Lniie oviuny nus Rye Pit; Other Grains Easier CHICAGO, July 26 (UP) Announced ceilings on the 1946 rye crop and board of trade ac tion placing a $1.44 ',4 maximum for July 1946 rye futures led to late selling in this pit today. Other grains eased with corn in dependently steady. Ryefinished the day off Vt to IV4 cents a bushel; wheat off "A to ; corn unchanged, oats off to 1, and barley off . Although grainmcn paid close attention to the English election it failed to have much effect as a price-making influence. Prices in all pits, particularly rye, moved nervously most of the session. Rye advanced sharply after an early break but lost ground before the close. Wheat trade was active with cash interests on both sides of the market. Mills bought liber ally of futures reflecting the im proved flour demand. Flour business has increased in anti cipation of a reduction in the August government mill sub sidy. Weather conditions for har vesting the winter wheat crop continued excellent and the movement of grain was hamper ed only by lack of box cars.
