The classes be gan yesterday and will continue for two weeks. ' There were 39 registered for the advanced swimming classes and 16 in the junior and senior life saving courses. ' There have been enough re quests for adult swimming classes so that one has been, established and will be offered daily at 5:30 p. m., Harvey Carter, chairman of the water safety committee, said. , There was so large a registra tion for the classes that they had to be divided into three groups. RNA Has Picnic At Riverside Park Royal Neighbors of La Grande had a potluck supper and circle discussion last night at Riverside park. The 23 members present took part in the program. In charge of arrangements were Mel ba Metsker and Delpha Clements. Cub Scouts lo Have Picnic at Pine Cone Cub Scout pack 112, sponsored by the Christian church will have a picnic at 6:30 p. m. Wednesday at Pine Cone, with all the par ents invited to attend. Each will bring his own lunch and ice cream and a beverage will be furnished by the pack. For transportation members will meet at the church. Those who wish, will be permitted to swim. Cub master Roy Pyle will be in charge, assisted by Lew Evans. David Slone left yesterday following a pre embarkation leave spent at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Stone, 1300 Ninth street. He was accompanied by I. lent Kami Evil., Iliemerlun, Wash. Pvt. Chester Evans arrived today on emergency fur lough from Albuquerque, N. M., to spend 15 days with his wife, the former Genevieve Collins, and their infant son, Jerry Jean. He will return to Albuquerque at the end of his furlough. First Lt. Marion E. (Bud) Rey nolds La Grande marine officer, has been awarded the Silver Star medal for heroism in action on Iwo Jima, the marine corps an nounced today. He was decorated at Camp Pendleton, Oceunside, Calif., where he now is stationed. The acjtion which vjon Rey nolds, a former La Grande high school and Willumette university football star, he decoration took place after fire from a Japanese pillbox had checked the advance of a marine infantry company. Reynolds volunteered to go for ward us an observer for a mortar platoon, and made his way, un der fire, to within a few feet of the enemy position. Then he call ed down mortar fire so close to his own post that he was wound ed by one of the shell fragments, the citation accompanying the medal said. Despite the wound, he contin ued lo direct the firing until the pillbox was destroyed.
