I was given the privilege of' drawing the first card. Ginglss shufried them and at least four of the wolves cut them to moke sure they weren't stacked. I picked up the top card, turned it over. It was the ace of spades. My letter to Gerry Ewing was a masterpiece in many ways, but I still don't know why she never onswer;d it. Even to this day she Yds never given mo a good explanation for that little bit' of rudeness. TWO of the boys who took part in the brief melee over Gerry s picture that night were Joo Ros bcrt and "Ridge" Hammel, both of Pennsylvania. Joe had been a Flying Tiger before signing on with C. N. A. C. and Ridge had only recently joined us, hnvlng transferred from Pan-American's African branch. Ridge hadn't checked out yet as a (light cap tain on the Himalaya run and was flying as a co-pilpt, usually with Rosbert. They were sched ulcd to take off the morning fol lowing the discussion over the picture a half an hour after me on the run to Kunming. The weather was mean even on the ground that day; the monsoon season was well begun, and rain had been lashing the field all night. It waa still pouring down as I waded through the muck from the flight office to my plane. The first plane out every morn.' ing always took about a half-hour start on the others and radioed back information about the weather and any Jap activity no ticed along the way. The Ice storm was moving west;- apparently, because Rosbert rah into it a shorter distance out of Dirjon than I had 25 or 30 miny utcs before. When I. told him over the phones that I was goinjf to head south I also told him why. "If I (ried to got back tar the base I'd take on a double load, Joe, and I'm too heavy1 right now to risk it." ' , '.. "Okay, Gen," Rosbert replied; But I'm not as far out as yoit are. I think I'll head back and wait for it to clear up. ..." That was tho last we heard of Joe Rosbert and Ridge Hammel until 49 days later wheri they came rumbling out of the jungto on a British Army truck in what was probably the most remark able return from the unknown world of Lower' Tibet that any white men have ever made.
