Rookie Leads Cards
To Win Over Cubs
NEW YORK, June 23 (UP) For the fifth straight season, the St.
Louis Cardinals are pin ling their pennant hopes on a prise rookie
pitcher "harvested" off one of their various "victory farms."
This lime it is 29-year-old Kenneth Burkhardi, slender six-foot,
one-inch right hander from the Columbus Red Birds, who has come
to the rescue at a time when the staff was riddled aid reeling.
Burkhardt, who won 15 games
at Columbus last year, got his
chance when Max Lanier went
into the service. Promoted to
starling duty, he has. won sev:n
games and lost three for the best
record of any hurler on the staff.
Burkhardt gave the Cards their
