Veteran Churchman Is Complimented At Dinner Party On the occasion of his 85th birthday anniversary. Rev. H. I. Hansen, for many years a Meth odist minister in the Grande Ronde valley, was honored when Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hansen,, his son and daughter-in-law, enter tained tat a family dinner Mon day night, i .... Present for ttie event were his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Cozad and their daughter, Mrs. Earl Ring and her baby, Sheryl Ann Ring, all of John Day; Miss Ethel Hansen of La Grande, the guest of hon or, thef host and hostess and their children, Howard and Carol Jean Hansen. A son, N. J. Hansen and fam ily of Chicago, and a daughter, Mrs. G. J. Mehl of Weiser, Ida ho, were unable to be present. Rev, Hansen was born in 1860 in Denmark- and came to the United States with his parents as a small boy.' The family set tled in -Omahi, Nebr., and two of his sisters, one of whom is more than 80 years old, still reside Inerc. He pame to La Grande in 1912 and left, for a few years while he held pastorates in Idaho and Utah. Rev. Hansen was active in the ministry for 45 years, re tiring 15 years ago. Included among his partorales in the val ley are Elgin, Cove and Island City. Eastern Star Group Plans Picnic Dinner The, Past Matrons of the Order of Eastern Star, will hold a pot luck picnic dinner at 0:30 o'clock tomorrow evening at the home of Mrs. Herman Roesch, 1512 Fifth street. Each person is to take her own table service, sugar, butter and a potluck dish. Fifteen to 20 per cent of the weight of a fowl is lost in dress ing it. Tyler and Mrs. Roy Skeen are in Caldwell, Idaho, representing the First Methodist church at a conference for Sun day school and youth workers. The meeting started yesterday and will continue through Fri day. Miss Suo Maddock and Miss Jeanne Alford of Portland are housegucsts of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Wilkins, visiting their cousin. Bob Wilkins, for the summer. Mrs. W. E. iWalkir.v district, presdent of American Legion auxiliary, is going to Wallowa to day to install officers there. Mrs. Wilkins also performed that rite in Elgin and Enterprise. She was accompanied by Mrs. George Tias, Mrs. O. B. Maxam and Mrs. Eu gene Millering. ..- Mrs. W. M. Peare left last night for Portland, called there by the death of her mother, Mrs. T. J. O'Day. Mrs. O'Day's death fol lowed an abdominal operation earlier in the week. Mrs. Jess Jones and her small son have returned from a six week visit in Pampa, Texas, and Oklahoma City, with her mother and sisters. Rebekahs and IOOF Have Memorial Mrs. S. A. Robertson, vice erand. nresided at a Crystal Ro bekah lodge session last night in the IOOF hall. Mrs. Thclma Shelton was ap pointed chairman of a commit tee in charge of the birthday par ly planned for June 27. After their meeting the group was joined by the Odd Fellows for a memorial. Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. L, M. Hug sang two hymns and were joined by the audieneein singing "Blessed Be the Tie That Binds." Thirty-five members and one visitor were present. Jones yesterday returned to La Grande after a three day stay in Walla Walla, . where they , wore guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones., Enroute home they stopped in Milton to see the Rogers cannery, and visited with about 50 La Grande high school students who are employed there during the summer months. Miss Jeanette Benefiol, direc tor, of nurses at Grande Rondo hospital, has gone to Minnesota to visit relatives and friends. She plans to be away about three weeks. . Dr. Robcn J. Mapske, president of Eastern Oregon college, left La Grande yesterday, enroute to the University of Chicago where he wf.'R conduct a three-week course in statistics and. an addi tional one week course. Lyle Johnson, registrar of East ern. Oregon college, will go to The Dalles Saturday night to participate in the capping cere monies of the cadet nurse corps class graduated from the college early this month. The ceremony will be hold Sunday. He will then go to Portland for two days to interview prospective students for the nurse corps. Mrs. John-, son will accompany her husband to The Dalles and will return to La Grande after the capping service. ' Mrs. Harold Dow reported that 25 more afghans have been sent to the hospital and that a request for 12 more will.be filled today.
