Former Doorkeeper Of Senate Dies PORTLAND, Ore., June 9 (UP) Funeral services will be held Monday for Frank M. Compton, who as doorkeeper of the U. S. senate for many years was inti mately acquainted with three vice presidents and many sena tors. He died in the Portland veterans hospital yesterday at the age of 77 years.,;, Compton served in the national capital during the vice presiden tial terms of Charles Dawes, Charles Curtis and John Garner. He was a close friend of Garner. Except for his years' in Washing ton, D. C, Compton had lived in Oregon since 1!)00. . Passenger Injured In Auto Accident Mrs. W. P. Rose, 19, was slightly injured yesterday when an automobile in which she was a passenger went out of control uiid ran into the ditch at the road side on highway 30, 18 miles west of La Grande. LONDON, June 9 OUP) Four thousand British brides of American GI's have applied for transportation to the Unit ed States in the month since V-E day. But love has no priority on transatlantic shipping. During May the army was able to find passage room for only B0 of thet thousands of clamoring GI brides. There are now 25,000 British wives awaiting transportation to their new homelund, and many of them have been wait ing more or less patiently for 11) months. During that entire period the war shipping situation has been so critical that the army never was able to transport more than 500 women. When the $752,000,000 war agencies appropriation bill em erged Irom the house last night after a tumultuous seven-hour session, it carried no funds for FEPC during the 1940 fiscal year beginning July 1. It carried only hulf of the $35,000,000 OWI ap propriation recommended by tilt house appropriations committee. The house passed the bill by u vole of 251 to 2. Trucker Killed, Iioy Injured 11 y Logs COLVILLE, Wash., June 9 (UP) Harry Parker, 50, logging contractor, was killed and his 15-year-old son Everett suffered a broken arm and shoulder when logs which they were loading on a truck rolled off a ramp and pinned them to the ground about 10 miles north of here yesterday. Corn reached new season highs in deferred deliveries under short-covering. Prices finished the day mixed. " ) Britain is Blamed For Syrian Trouble BEYROUTH, June 9 (UP) French Gon. Paul-Etienne Bey net said today that his country men acted only in self-defense during the recent Damascus outbreak and hinted that Bri tish arms and money had encour aged the Syrian stand against France. Beynet, delegate on the French committee to Syria and Lebanon, said ho has proof that the British sent machine guns and tommy guns to the Syrian police who later used them against the French. Truman To Take Three-Day Rest OLYMPIA, Wash., June 9 (UP) Gov. Mon C. Wallgren said today that President Harry S. Truman plans to spend three days at Olympia. Wallgren said that a change in plans would not permit Mr. Tru man to arrive Monday.
