Commenting on the conduct of
the crew throughout this action
and the time they served to
gether, the skipper of the LST
said:
"I have known these men well,
I respect all of them because their
attitude and actions have de
manded the respect of all fair
minded men. I prefer that may
name not be used as my reward
came each day in the coopera
tion and respect that the crew
has afforded me. I believe it can
to truthfully said that no ship
regardless of size or fire power
fought more desperately to sur
vive." Holman returned recently after
spending 13 months on sea duty,
and his mother, Mrs. Maude Hol
man, 2004 Adams avenue, spent
two weeks with him in Seattle.
He expects to be in La Grande
on leave early next month.
Before entering the coaut guard
three years ago, Holman was an
employee of the Fitzgerald Furni
ture company. Ho attended local
schools and Eastern Oregon college.

Stocks Continues
NEW YORK, May 29 (UP)
Stocks advanced today for the
fifth consecutive session, reach
ing further new high ground for
more than seven years, while
commodity prices Improved and
listed bonds approached their re
cent 30-year mark.
Stock market sentiment was
bolstered largely by yesterday's
oplimistlo view of the reconver
sion period taken by WPB Chief
J. A. Krug, recent favorable rail
road and corporation earnings
statements and the moves of a
number of companies to reduce
their debt and strengthen their
capital positions.
Sales totaled 1,600,000 shares
compared with 1,570,000. "Big
board" bond sales aggregated
$11,700,000 against $9,780,000.
Curb stock turnover amounted to
410,000 shares compared with
360,000.

CHICAGO, May 29 (UP) A
forecast of a sharp decline in the
Kansas winter wheat crop stimu
lated strong gains in wheat late
on the board of trade today. Oth
ed grains ruled firm.
Active demand for 'cash grain
and additional heavy flour sales
to the government prompted a
strong undertone in wheat. The
tremendous European food needs
continued to be an underlying
bullish factor.
Rye overcame early uneasiness
prompted by overnight charges
that the rye market had been ma
nipulated in the past. Distiller
demand and the marked reduc
tion in rya stocks from a year
ago were buoyant influences.
