Newspaper Page TextMember's Birthdays Are Celebrated By Crystal Rebekahs Crystal Hebekah lodge met last night at the IOOF hall for a short lodge session, presided over by 'Mrs. ,W. H. Gooderhara, and the sociai hour which followed. A birthday program was pre sented by a committee headed by Mrs. Fannie Carter. '' It was dedicated to members having birthday anniversaries in May.' "The SUr Spangled Banner," "America the Beautiful" and "America" were sung by the audience which also joined in the salute to the flag. Readings were given by Mrs. Lucille Ansell, Mrs. Mabel Anson and Mrs. Tom Ruckman. Mrs. Bertha Osborn paid a tribute to the late Presi dent Roosevelt and the national prayer was given by by Mrs. Ida Beery. A flag drill was present ed, during which R. J. Kitchen recited "In Flanders Field," and Mrs. Alma Carroll offered a short prayer. Members having birthdays were Mis. William Shade, Eliza beth Grider Allen, Mrs. John Bowery, Mrs. Howard Ball, Mrs. T. H. Gaither, Mrs. Mollie Moss, Mrs. Effie German, Mrs. O. May Noyes, Mrs. Zelpha Domey, Mrs. Cordelia Davis, Mrs. Ethel Daw son, Mrs. Elizabeth March, Mrs. Cynthia Thompson, Mrs. Fred Balmes, and Mrs. H. M. Halsey. . Fifty-one members and two visitors were present as well as the Odd Fellows who joined the Rebekahs for the program. Re freshments . were served in the dining room at tables decorated with spring flowers. Sorority Plans for Picnic on June 5 1 Gamma chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Tuesday evening at the Sacajawea hotel for a short busi ness session. The members plan ned that their next meeting will be a picnic to be held at the home of Mrs. Jack Denny June 5. Present were Mi's. Denny, Miss Helen Smith, Mrs. Layton Gra ham, Mrs. George Wilson, Mrs. Keith Walker, Mrs. James Kissel burgh, Mrs. Louis Zecha, Mrs. Robert Bruch, Mrs. William Hamilton and Miss Kathleen Rochester. Weddings Social Events Thursduy, May 24, 1945 Page .3 Memorial Service Is Conducted By Eastern Star Group An impressive memorial serv ice for departed members was held last evening by Hope chap ter, Order of the Eastern Star, in the Masonic temple. Mildred Winters and .Bruce Morehead, worthy matron and patron, pre sided, and pro-torn officers were Helen Richardson and Ida Cher ry. The courtesy girls, assisted by Marie Wheeler, Electa, presented a degree, at the close of which Edyth Worley sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Among the visitors and mem bers from out of town who were introduced were Martie S. Brown and W. Brown of Santa Ana, Calif., Sylvia McBride, Bessie Lumsden and Jennie Thompson. Marie Sherrill and Mary Fol som reported on their recent trip to Waitsburg, Wash., where they attended a meeting of Rainbow chapter. Eva German, mother advisor of the Rainbow assembly, an nounced the meeting to be held Monday night, and invited all Eastern Stars and Masons. Mrs. Win'fcrs announce the meeting of Hope chapter June 13th will honor past matrons and patrons. Minnie Zweifel is chair man of the hostess committee. Officers Are Chosen By Altar Society Mrs. Clarence Becker was elected picsident of St. Mary's Altar society at a meeting in the parsonage. Mrs. Dan Turley was elected vice-president, Mrs. Ar nold Gerber, secretary, and Mrs. Joseph Grant, treasurer. The group's meetings will be held the second Wednesday of p"h month at 7:30 p. m. in the USO center, beginning June 13. Marian Nelson's Betrothal T0I4 as Parents Entertain Announcement of the betroth al of Miss Marian Nelson to Rob ert Emmett Jordan was made last evening when her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August P. Nelson, en tertained at their home. The wedding will be solem nized June 19 in Our Lady of the Valley Catholic church. Jordan is the son of the late John P. and Mrs. Marjorie V. Jordan of Seattle. He received his education in that city and is employed us a fireman for Union Pacific in La Grande. Miss Nel son received her education a Sacred Heart academy and La Grande high school and St. Jo seph's school of nursing in Ta coma. She is employed at St. Joseph's hospital in La Grande. The announcement was made with a clever arrangement, a tallow pot bearing Jordan's name tied to a nurse's cap inscribed with the name of the bride-elect. Games were played and re freshments were served. Guests were Mrs. E. P. Shrock, who presented musical numbers, Helen Smith, Dora Morton, Ava Harper, Rexa Winburn, Anetta Johnson, Florence Prescott, and Miss Nelson. Women of Country Club Have Luncheon Mrs. George Wilson was intro duced as a new member at the Wednesday luncheon of women of La Grande Country club. Mrs. Bessie Lumsden and Mrs. Heloise S'.ewart were guests. It was announced that last week's winners at bridge were Mrs. B. W. Tillotson and Mrs. Chase Bohnenkamp. C. Fleshman returned Monday morning from Eoise, Ida., where they visited their son, Lt. George Fleshman who is stationed at the Gowen army airfield. They attended church services in the field chapel and were premittcd to inspect the bomber on which ne is a navigator. . Mrs. Edna Owsley and her granddaughter, Phyllis Sherwood will leave tomorrow for Summer Lake, near Bend, to visit rela tives.' Mrs. Owsley will spend the summer there, but Phyllis plans to return in about two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Smythe, who recently sold their faim on the foothill road southeast of La Grande to the Smutz brothers, have moved to The Dalles. Mrs. Dwight Fleshman, who was released from the Grande Ronde hospital Saturday, was a guest at the home of her hus band's parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Fleshman until Monday when she left for her home near Wal lowa. Lynn and Carl Fleshman, of near Wallowa are spending a week with their . grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. C, Fleshman. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Carter returned Wednesday from a busi ness trip to Portland. . Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Webb are expected to arrive in La Grande this 1 weekend from Portland to visit relatives and friends. He has recently been discharged from the army under the point system. Webb, a former l Grande resident, was employed as a clerk at tha Foley hotel.
