It would like to think that enough life and treasure had been poured out on European battlefields to cleanse the earth of the revolting prac tices that have smirched forever the history of the once-civilized nation of Germans. But the purge of savagery is only half finished. Victory in Europe may have put out the cremating fires and halted the scientific, systematic destruction of "inferior peoples." But until victory over Japan is won, this other type of savagery will con tinue not scientific and syste matic but primintive and fanati cal, a savagery which has grown from a i itualstic madness ages old into a warped creed of chiv alry. ' The civilized world is sick to death of pictures like this. It would like to think that it had seen the last of them. Notorious Prisoner Escapes With Ladder Made of Mop-sticks LANSING, Kas May 17 (UP) William La Trasse, 63-ycar-old escape artist, train robbers and convicted murderer, escaped to day from the Kansas state peni tentiary here. Robert Hudspeth, warden, said La Trasse escaped from the pris on hospital where he had been held for observation. Apparent ly he obtained a key to the build ing and "simply walked out" of the prison grounds. He fashioned a makeshift lad der by joining n number of mop slides with ae(he)iive tape, at tached the device to the south wall of the prison and climbed over. It was his second escape from the Kansas prison.- A genet n tion ago he broke out after hav ing been arrested in connection with a spectacular train holdup west of Kansas City, Kan. Self-Government is Promised Burma as Conditions Permit SAN KRANCISCO, May 17 (UP) The British information service distributed an announce ment toeiay that Britain after the war will grant full self-government to Burma when internal conditions permit free elections. In London, a government state ment of polie?y on Burma sug gested that an executive council be formed to supplement the present government of Burma until a general election can be held. The nnnouiie'cinent said that when it becomes possible to hold elections, a new Burmese legis lature will take over law-making functions. "The Burmese people will then be in a position to decide on the most suitable form of full self government within the British commonwealth of nations. People Will Docido "It will be for the Burmese people to agree maong them selves on the form of self-government and the kind of consti tution they desire," the state ment says.
