Season's First Fire Burns 5 Acres Fire believed to have been started by cureless campers turn ed over five acres Of brush and new growth timber land yester day about eight miles from Nor"' Powder on the Anthony lake road. It was the first fire of the season in this urea. The fire was controlled by tho crew of the state forestry depart ment protective unit. The blaze came but a few hours before Governor Snell pro claimed state fire regulations in effect severul dayft before the previously fixed date due to the dry condition of timber and brush lands. The regulations, which Went into effect at 1 n.tn. today, pro vide that there may be no burn ing within an eighth of a mile of any forest lands without a per mit from the protective service, and that all summer safeguards must be observed in connection with logging operations. ' Permits for burning may be obtained at the Union or Wal lowa county offices of the forest protection service. A slew is a marshy place. ' They conceded, however, that the Japanese 1 government may surrender before that time. Thij general feeling of Ameri can Gt's is that Japan will.be defeated within nine months. Although some' of the enlisted men already have been overseas two years, most of thorn want to stay in the fight until Japan is completely defeated. The prevailing thought seems to4ie "We've come this far, we might as well finish the job properly." While in Gen, Douglas Mac- Arthur's own words the Pacific war will be accelerated by the end of the European phase, some military sources believe it will be three or four months before the necessary troops and equipment reach this theater to mount an offensive against the Japanese mainland.
