Jfaticw Faces Worst Clothing Shortage! Since Start bt Ylir i By 8. BURTON HEATH ' iAnd POUGLAS LAHSEN ; WASHINGTON, Apr. 11 (NEA) L-yv can keep secrets as well psi Iho' next fellows can, but this otje has 'leaked out already in some mysterious fashion. There's evidence of a clothing shortage ipithe United States. . Mother - wants a house dress. Shi1. says she hasn't a thing to put on her back. Father needs a White shirt to wear to church. Sister would look sweet in dot ted swiss or voile. And baby brother can't go around, yet, without diapers. Papa's and big brother's work pants are dis gracefully ragged and their work gloves just aren't, any more. The reM of the family wardrobe is getting patchy, particularly when bath laundering and dry cleaning Collegiate fad of wearing blue denim has contributed to short : age of work clothes, tuke' so long that they keep gar lnerits but of use for . extended piiriods. ;' '(There' is a clothing shortage hater; though in any other coun try in .the world, today, eyes Would pop almost out of heads if oljf '-retail slocks' were suddenly if)Ude.uvailable there. ; : j- Many Items Disappear H:hti 'clothihg situation, for the entire family, is in its worst con dition' since the war began. Item after item has disappeared from racks and shelves. Many desir able, garments are going to be homer ir find this summer and aiiiuHiiv than ever before. But except in certain lines, ihero really-is no shortage. For almost everything that can't be had, there is a fairly acceptable substitute. In at least some in stances supplies actually are greater than before the war, and it ,is only the prosperity intensi fied demand that makes many goods hard to obtain; .The most' acute shortages, in order of tightness, are in work gloves, work clothing, children's clothing and women's stockings. Government agencies insist thi't there is plenty of raw cotton and machines with which to fab ricate it. The shortage, so far as cotton goods go, is in man power. The office of civilian re quirements also insists there is and has been'ho. shortage of wool RATION CALENDAR Processed Foods: Book 4 Blue stamps C2 through G2 valid through April 28. Wool itself it Ufil scarce, says the QCR, but rnqjlt power is not adequate to fabflt cate enough to satisfy demand. . One major reason fpr Uie ap pearance of shortage has been over-concentration upon I more expensive garment, wh cl makes it difficulty and soma-, times impossible, to find niog? i-rate-priced suts and dress, This is to be remedied by a hew program allocating, mosf of ttw available yarns to Jower-pree garments. - . '' I. , College girls and their imltSr tors are blamed for part of the trouble with work clothing. They arc running around, in dentin slacks made with material (hat should have been used for wo'rlf pants, shirts, overalls,' i frockfl, etc., the department of laMor says. But this is a secondary consideration. The military 'is to blame, if you insist. '' ' :' The boys who pre igh(ing the Nazis in Europe and the Japs fn the Pacific require an- enortnauj quantity of duck for tcpts' and tarpaulins. ' They also are bnrn ing up vast numbers of heavy duty . tires that use cord macje in competition with that duck. . Tire Cord Vital ' !..'
