TURN 'UPWARD DURING WEEK IN BUSINESS (Continued Krom Pge One) there aro unmistnlcabl fIkhb of Bounder recovery than that experi enced last fall after tho artificial outburst of activity during the early summer mo.itlis. "Wholesale volume rose by a uub stantlal percentiif;e aliove that of the: week piccetilnji. aided by th-3 larver orders received from agricultural dis tricts, where the outlook has been Improved by the rising prices received for the major pioducts." Kansas Farmer's Girl Upsets Old London (Continued Tom Pntte One) was a rank outsider, five weeks be fore the race. She predicted Len Harvey would lose his British heavyweight title to Jack Peterson and suffer an eye In Jury In the fiRht. She forecast the a to 1 victory of Manchester over Portsmouth In the foothall final and" said a red haired boy would kick the winning goal. Gene's big triumph came when the gruesome Brighton trunk murders were disclosed. When the first body was found she wrote in her weekly column: "This is connected in some way with another murder, which, but for this, might never have been dis covered." Three weeks Inter the second trunk murder was revealed by officers searching Brighton premises in con nection with the first case. Wrong Reaction Is Clue To Murderer (Continued Prom Page One) house and screamed hysterically for help. Hyr story was this: Unable to sleep, she arose In the night and went Into the front rcom and had just reached tho door when two armed men sprang upon her. One, she said, was tall and the other, short. They held her by the throat to keep her from screaming; then one disappeared into the bedroom. An ijvtitant later a shot wus fired. "What in hell did you do that for?" rxreamed the thug who held Mrs. Gilhcrscn. I had to he vok up," answered the other. Then, according to the grief-stricken widow, they fled. When Mrs. Gilberson told this story to Ellis Parker he patted her hand and assured Iwr they would catch the murdcrera. "You'd better go heme and get some rest." he advised kindly. No sooner had she left his offic:-, however, than bo turned to his as sistants and said, "She killed Gllber jDn!" "How do you figure that?" 'New listen," s:ild Parker. "The shot was fired the moment tho man disappeared into the bedroom. There were only two men there. As the shot came so quickly, how did the oth.T thug know it was not tho hus band who had done the shooting? Mrs. Gllber.ion says he yelled the mo ment the shot was fired, 'What In hell did you do that for?' "That's not the way an accomplice would react undr those clrcum- ""'"V1, 1 11 ' stances. It seems to rr.c tho natural thing would bo alarm on his part. He would leap up, gun ready, ani call his confederate's name. "She killed him and cooked uo this story." A Jury recommended clemency, and so th-3 Widow Gilberson is serving a term for murder. But If it hadn't been for t'ic rhro-wd reasoning of Ellis Parker, she might be a free woman today. WtfjmgL."
