This for the moment. It was be lieved, meant accelerated buying of the metal by the treasury, and rising world prices for sllrer. How soon the treasury might reach lu ultimate objective of 25 per cent silver for the nation's metallic mone tary reserves was regartfcdi as proble matical. Definite Information as to how this will be calculated, and how much sil ver will be required. Is lacking. It has been assumed that the treasury, now holding some 600.000.000 ounces, would have to purchase some 1.000. 000.000 ounces more, or virtually all of the known floating supply In world markets. The prospect of nationalization of the stocks In this country, probably In excess of 100.000.000 ounces, loom ed recently with the rise In the open market price to close to 50 cents an ounce, since the silver act limited the price which the treasury might pay for those stocks to that figure. If the price should have gone above 50 cents without nationalization, the treasury "might have had difficulty in getting holders to sell.
