II II II 11 II I I I I 1 1 II il J-K I W jn m I I I 1 I WASHINGTON (P) Mid -western and western alatea have taken the lead over other sections In the move ment seeking to encour&ce home con struction through easing of the tax burden on real and tangible property, With national attention now con centrated on the new federal home building program, the entire property tax, problem probably will figure prominently In the fall elections ox many states, The tax burden always Is an lm portant Item, to be considered before building a home, and numerous or ganizations of property owners and the National Aasoclatlon of Real Es tate Boards contend the levy on real estate now la so high It discourages construction of homes. .. A survey of the local and stat taxation committee of the association of real estate board shows seven states have over-all limitation on property taxes, either by law or by constitution; 21 states have statutory or. constitutional limits on real es tate taxes; eight have no real estate tax for state purposes; while six have no limitation of any kind on the amount of taxes which may be levied Bgtdnst real eutatp for state, muni cipal or county purposea. The committee's report said un usual activity in the mid-western and western states looking toward trim ming down on taxes on real property. The findings Included: Oregon: Initiative petition now in circulation for constitutional amend ment. Amendment designed to re duce over-all limit successively over period of years until per cent limitation fixed In 1040. Washington: Active campaign to reenact statutory 40 mill limitation (on 50 per cent valuation). Hope Urn to establish principle of limitation eventually making It constitutional.
