According to 'the Research; Department of the NRA, an
annual buildiiifSr volume of 800,000 residential units is re
quired to supply the need for' new dwellings. This takes no
account of replacement of existing sub-standard homes, and
until these are replaced the needed volume could easily be
at the rate of 2,000,000 structures a year. A building re
vival could fall far below these high limits, and still be the
most powerful of factors in fighting depression. No dollar
Vve siend does more work, in stimulating domestic trade and
providing employment, than does the building dollar.
I Surveys show Unit 37.3 per cent of nil the money spent goes to labor at
the site to excavators, graders, enrpentors, masons, plumbers, plasterers.
etc. The balance of 02.7 per cent goes to buy needed materials and sup
plies and the Rreat bulk of that Is paid to workers In the plants and
factories manufacturing them. In general about eighty cents out of each
dollar goes to labor, directly or Indirectly.
i The heavy Industries those supplying such manufactures as steel, lum
bor, cement were hit hardest by hard times. They are facing the gravest
difficulties In recovering from them. Spurring construction would do
much to solve a legion of our most troublesome problems.

his wife and grandchildren from

Dr. Ingram was shot to death In
his summer bungalow on the out
skirts of Pelping, before the eyes of
his horror-stricken family. A veter

in China for 50 years. Dr. Ingram

during 1034, B. H. Baldock, state
highway engineer, declared today.
In 1033 Oregons share ol leueroi
highway funds aggregated $0,442,037,
based on' a total appropriation of
8400,0O0,obo. Under the Cartwrlght-
Hayden bill this appropriation was
reduced to i200.000.000.
