hotel wan taxed last evening for the
Una! program of the Miulo Depart
ment oi the La Grande Neighbor
hood club. The program originally
c planned for a couple of month ago
i) was arranged by Mrs. A L. Rich-
t ardson, chairman, and so well was
It built that the large audience was
very enthusiastic as the several
groups of numbers were given,

club the past year. Introduced Mr,
and Urn. Charles Mixer, late of Chi
cago, who presented groups of vtolln
umbqra and dramatic interpreta
tions, respectively, Mrs. A, U Rich
ardson directed; the Ladles Triad
choir. In two groups and they, like
wise, did most excellent chorus work.

tivities of this department for thlB

Visitors Are
Complimented
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Allen who
have been here recently visiting
among old friends and acquaintances
were honored at a party during their
visit, Mr. and Mrs. William Gable
and Mr. and Mrs. Lowell William
son entertaining at the Gable home.
The guests were members of a bridge
club which was functioning when
the guests of honor lived here. Prizes
for high scores went to Mr. and Mrs.
. Waited Nowland, and Mr. and Mrs.
Allen received the guest prizes. Mr.
Allen la now supervisor of manual
training in ths Chemawa Indian
school near Salem. (

to friends of the couple here and in
their own home neighborhoods. The
bride was formerly Miss Edna Gll-
klson of this community, a graduate
of the Muddy Creek high school and

At Mrs. Alstott's
The Past Guardian Neighbors club
of the Neighbors of Woodcraft held
an Interesting meeting Friday after
noon at the home of Mrs. W. H. Al.
stott, 3015 Oak street, with five
members present. It was decided to
hold but one meeting each month
during the three summer months
and the next meeting would come
on July 13, at the home of Mrs.
Gertrude Sullivan.
At the conclusion of the business,
the time was spent on the quilt
which the club Is making for relief
purposes. Mrs. Alstott served dur
ing the afternoon.

PASSES FRIDAY
Thursday afternoon, a number of
women of the Lutheran church met
at tlie parsonage to organize a Wom
en's Missionary society. The officers
elected are: Mrs. Edwin Bracher,
president; Genevieve Nelson, vice
president; Mrs. Frank HArtman, re
cording secretary; and Mrs. Henry
Pleper, treasurer. During the meet
ing. Miss Nelson presented the de
votions, and Mrs. Bracher led the
lesson, "War or Peace." Interesting
programs are planned for the com
ing meetings, the next of which will
be held June 28 at the Nelson home.

UNION (Special) Mrs, Mary Flck-
Un, wife of Tom Flcklln, a pioneer
of the county and for many years
H resident of Union, died Friday
afternoon at Pendleton following an
illness of about two montlis. , Ar
rangements for the funeral had not
been completed today.
Mrs. Flcklln Is survived by her
husband, one son, Claude, who lives
In Pendleton and three grandchll
dren. Mr. Flcklln had been very
seriously 111 for some time, but re
cently was much Improved and was
at the. stock show when word was
received of his wife's passing.

of Tom Cock. Junior member of the
firm of Cock Bros., is exceedingly
critical and while Mrs. Cock la re
turning to Union today from Port
land where Mr. Cock was taken a
short time ago for medical examina
tion, accompanying her husband. It
was feared that he would not be of Charles M
able to survive the trip. It was gen
erally known that Mr. Cock's condi
tion was more or less serious, but
Portland physicians found trouble of
cancerous nature and In a very
advanced state.

lodge. Two candidates from 8um-
mervllle received the first degree,
They were Gaston Sion and Virgil
Sanderson. Articles of Incorporation
for the cemetery were received and
adopted and It will be known in the
future as the Odd Fellows Cemetery,
Incorporated. An oyster supper was
planned for next Friday evening.

The negroes were arrested near
Greenwood, Miss., and on being
taken to thaO city they confeased of
fleers said, to the attempted assault
on the wife of a plantation manager
at Sledge, Miss.

their very best efforts toward making

'Representatives and visitors from
eleven of the western United States
and three of the western provinces
of Canada will be In attendance. It
is estimated that there will be ap
proximately 300 hundred or more
visitors here on this occasion and the
opportunity for properly advertising
our city and community Is great.
The local members of the organ
ization have been assured of splendid
support by the semi -centennial com
mittees In entertaining their guests,
which otherwise they could not pos
sibly undertake. Yet aside from this
other help will be needed and it to
sincerely hoped that every one will
respond with their usual good will
and effort In carrying out the enter
tainment of our visitors during the
convention.
"These visitors will rot be asking
something for nothing, yet they do
not expect to be held up. Many of
the representatives present will be
the Old Timers of the Union Pacific
railroad as well as Old Timers from
other western roads. It Is expected i
that many will attend the convention
and stay over for the home-coming
celebration. In fact, this feature has
1 ready been expressed by a number
that expect to attend."
