Proverbs 17 : 1. . , A CONSriCTOUS VACANCY A good soldier, a good citizen, a good friend was yester day laid to rest in the beautiful burial ground at Summer vifle. ColonelTtalph R. Huron has left a vacancy in the life of this community, and in the life pf the state as well, that will take long to fill. Death enfolded him in the prime of his life, taking from the living an active, intelligent, purposeful worker. Capable service to his country and humanity may truly le enscriled across his lifetime of accomplishment. All who knew Colonel Huron mourned his passing; his friends were legion and they were in every walk of life. Perhaps as soldier, public official and civic worker was Goloner Huron best known. As a defender of his country's flag he served in the Spanish-American war, in General Wheaton's expedition to Cavite and the Batangas Provinces, the expedition of General Bates to South Camarines Province and Captain Lyle's expedition to Ragay, all in the Philippine Islands. He saw action at the Duyo river, Calabanga, Lupi and Ragay. In'the World war he served honorably in France as first lieutenant, Q. M. C. and wound up his military service with ten years of splendid achievement in the Oregon national intni-ft fiHv:nrino' fmm first rrmt.iin nf fYirrmnrtv P 1 A .T:i-jinr? to thp mrrnnnnriino' offirer nf the ISfith Infuntrv rppi- ment. As public official he served as postmaster of La Grande for 12 years, and again his record speaks for itself an enviable one. And as civic worker, each year found him leading and assisting the community in some way toward betterment. When the end came he was serving as general chairman of the semi-centennial U. P. celebration to be held here July 19-21. inclusive. Truly, his passing leaves a conspicuous vacancy. POET'S CORNER Among erxduit ram tbe elg.htit grade t OnlnJ school this rexr Is FrwSeric t.
