San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Chicago Detroit, New York JAPAN'S PROGRAM IN THE ORIENT Japan again comes out in the open with her recent warn ing to the rest of the' world .'that she expects "hands off" except her own in China. Under the guise of assuming re sponsibility of maintains; peace in the eastern half of Asia, Japan says she will countenance no great funds from other countries for development of China or any further loans or shipments for military improvement of the Chinese. China is immediate and strong in expression of resentment against the Japan edict but that will not deter the Japanese in their program. The Japanese, determined to gain control of the orient, are timing their actions well. With a great number of the principal countries of the world occupied at the present time with their own external or internal troubles, Japan knows full well her program to attempt to grab China will meet with far less protest now than at any other period. Japan's intentions in the far east have long been recognized. That she will resort to the armed invasion tactics as in Manchuria is doubt ful, at least for the present. That she will gradually move into the great yellow empire by various means of penetra tion, fraternization and colonization is already evident. Future growth of foreign trade of these United States lies principally with China and the orient. Japan's now open and even hostile attitude to prevent other hands in that trade except her own, can be taken as a more direct warning to us than to any other country. Japan would seem to be bet ting a good two to one that she gets away with it. If she does, she removes the principal source of future success and development of American business and industry. It is going to take more than the usual "pink whiskered" diplomacy to prevent real hostilities. The longer we indulge in this antiquated method of exchanging soft tongued lies over the situation the closer we will come to assisting.Japan in her desires to our own embarrassment and loss. It will be interesting to see if our present Roosevelt has the ability of his immortal predecessor of the same name to call oiJiiue opuue ngnc now una increny not only insure our certain future progress and continuation of our Oriental trade but at the same time call the Japanese bluff in a man ner that will also minimize chances of any hostilities between ,we two countries nt the present time. BOONE HEARS READ SPEECH Harold Boone drove to Baker yes terday to attend the noon luncheon meeting of the Idaho Coal Dealers association at which time Leonard E. Read, of San Francisco, Western man ager of the United States chamber of commerce, was the principal speaker. He used as his subject "The New Deal in Legislation." This was the annual meeting of the association and was attended bv sev eral local coal dealers. Five members of the co-etl riflo team at the University of Missouri fired perfect 600 scores in postal matches with the University of Illi nois and Drexel university. MRS. HAUSER ARRIVES HERE Mrs. Minnie M. Hauaer arrived in La Orande this morning for her of ficial visit to Hope Chapter No. 13, Order or Eastern Star. Mrs. Hauser has been In Eastern Oregon for sev eral days visiting in her official ca pacity as grand matron of Oregon. She makes her home at Salem.
