James 2: 8, 9. ! ! HIT NO AIRPORT WORK HERE! A news diKpaU:h from Baker which appear elsewhere in the Obmjrver today, U the effect that 100 men went to work thin morning on the $15,000 uinxrt project there, and that 200 men will he employed for a 40-day period, hrinjfs to mind the fact that fi Grande Ktill overlook the opportunity to lft an airport built through C. W. A. funds even though thoge in charge of the approval of Oregon airport project paid' a peiwmal vwit to La Grande in an effort to Btir up intereht. TVie La Crande chamber of commerce, which leased the prejient airport (some time ago and which is continuing to pay rental in order to keep the airport in a "municipal" class, has done everything possible to obtain a new airport. The chamljer of commerce even went so far as to offer to co-operate financially in payment of rental on a five-year lease pro viding the city would take the lease over in order to give it a municipal name in fact. The government requires that all airport work done under C.W.A. funds must be on fields either leased or belonging to municipal or other governmental bodies. The only thing that seemingly stands in the way of a La Grande airport is that despite all efforts of the chamber of conihierce to Interest the city fathers in the proposed develop ment ut little if any cost to the city, our commissioners appear not only lukewarm to every proposal but under guise of "liability" and "indebtedness" on this small needed outlay, lurtr a cold shoulder to the proposition. Therefore Jji Grande, though naturally situated to make an ideal air division point, seems destined bemuse of a seem ing lack of plogressivenesM, vision or foresight of the ma jority of its city commissioners, to stay out in the cold while both Baker and Pendleton develop their possibilities to the utmost. Horse and buggy administration of city affairs will itever allow Im Grande to keep pace with the progressivencss of the present nge, or hold its rightful spot as the major city of Eastern Oregon in the days to come. "M&n ts a creator." In toe H. R. A., he believe, there is the beginning of something per manent since the government 1 at temptng to bring the four factors. in volved in production together and to integrate them. The N. R. A. and the new deal point to a planned. econ omy, he said, the money has to be sound and stable and the ground work is being built In the present devaluation, and the breaking away from the "laissez-faire" use of the government for the ends of industry. To succeed in bringing the United States out of the present economic situation, Mr. Gaiser believe it will be necessary to furnish an improved product to the consumer; eliminate waste of production; the exchange medium must be kept at a high and btable level: nationalization of banks must come about; the extreme in equality in Income must be reduced, and the government- must play an in creasing part in industry, a require ment unquestionably a part of the N. R. A. Mr. Gaiser pointed out, however, that he does not believe that all businesses should be taken over by the government but that the large incomes should be cut down.
