LIQUOR I'UICKfS SKKM HIGH
Prices that will be charged in Oregon state liquor stores
were announced during the weekend by1 the liquor cotrtniiH
sion. Cheapest blended whiskey will sell at $1,10 a pint,
?2 a quart; and bottled in iKind, 16 to 17 years old, $1.75 a
half pint, $3.35 a pint. And for month.'; wo have been hear
ing tall of low prices that would defeat the bootlofftfer.
In several places over the state retailers, offer liquor at
leis than, the new quotations. ' l!ootlep:);ers' prices are not
nearly so high, it is said. One Portland newspaper Monday'
Said one of the poorest grades of blend liquors is listed in
the state store catalog at almost 51) cents above the price
for which it is being sold in most of the private retail stores.
It goes on to say that Three-Star Hennessey brandy will
coat $1.05 more a quart at the state store than at privately
owned retail stores,
Here in La Grande one man who retails liquors said yes
terday that he could sell blends at profit below the price the
state will ask,
' It would seem that if announced slate liquor store prices
are maintained the real purposes of prohibition to provide
increased. 't'evciiues and to Compete favorably with the boot
legger will lie defeated,
Many people who voted for repeal did so not because of
the desire to partake themselves but to eliminate the boot
lpggjnff, racketeering and crime conditions which flourished
under so-called prohibition. If tho individual who uses' and
desires' liquor may "still purchase fair quality moonshine
from'the bootlegger at a price less than the state liquor store
charges, he is not likely to change to the legal product.
According to the reports of the consus takers, the women
at t,he seaside this summer are but in a bare majority.' '
In 1931 the cost of government was $107.37 per capita or
28 per; cent of. the income of the American people. '

The wounded man had mentioned
