Pagre Three SOCIETY NOTES MIm Beat Duke, Society Bdltor Telephone Main M0 VnW 1:30 a. m Parent Teacher Associations Of La Grande Pay Tribute To Founders of The Movement Parent teacher ablation in the I -whispering Hope" and the city nave been celebrating Pounders' day, paying tribute to Mrs. Theodore Blrney and Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, the founders, who organized the first association on Feb. 17, 1897. Mrs. N. W. Frees, president of the La Grande City council or P. T. A., last night addressed the La Grande High school association on the founding of the movement and paid tribute to Its originators, at a meeting at the High school gymnasium. "The Maker of Dreams" by Oli phant Down, a fantasy, was presented by the expression class by permission of Samuel French, and under the ' direction of Miss Kathryn Sartaln. The roles were ably carried by Miss Mildred Green who was Plerette, Glen McKenzle, Pierrot; and Jack McClay, the Maker of Dreams. Andrew Loney Jr., presented the High school orchestra In three num bers, "Trailing Arbutus", by Garbett; "Andantlno IdlUoco", by Drlgo; and "Mignonette",- by Hadley. Two numbers appropriate to the period during which the P. T. A. was founded were presented by a mixed quarter, Mrs. A. U Qralapp, Mrs. H. N. Ashby, E, E. Hurley and Ray mond O. Williams. They sang "Sweet and Low" and "Believe Me If All Tliose Endearing Young Charms." Lee Reynolds presided at the meet ing. Punch and wafers were served after the program by Miss Nora Myers and Miss Agnes Hatteburg of the home economics department. Parkdale Club Is Entertained The Parkdale club enjoyed a pot luck luncheon and program here Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Clyde Webb. Twenty members and two guests, Mrs. Margaret Bly . stone and Mrs. Fred Bowery, were present. Mrs. Tom Carpenter presided during the business session and Mrs. R. A. Wllkerson arranged the program which Included piano numbers by Mrs. Webb: recitation. Mrs. Alma Carroll; songs, by Mrs. F. Dynl and community singing. Luncheon was served at 12 o'clock. Mrs. Dollie Dahlstrom will enter tain at her home In May Pork on Feb. 14, at 1:3 o'clock. Founders' Day To Be Observed P. T. A. song, by a girls sextet from Central school; "Holy, Holy, Holy", "All English", a folk song, "Winter Song", by Flschel, . and "Choral", Luther, by Mrs. Leo Miller's second violin class at the J, H. Ackerman Training school. "Of Interest In February", a playlet will be presented by Willow school, while the Green wood school will furnish two num- i bera by a harmonica band, "Old Folks at Home" and "Old Black Joe". A musical skit, "Jack and the Bean Stalk" will be presented by River ia, and songs popular in the 90's will be sung by a mixed quartet from the La Grande High school. Rebekah Lodge In Session Mrs. Llllie Nlzer was elected to membership In Crystal Rebekah lodge Wednesday night at a meeting at the Odd Fellows hall. Other business matters were settled Including ar rangements for a benefit card party which the lodge will sponsor Satur day evening at the Odd Fellows hall. Mrs. W. E. McClure Is chairman. Announcement also will be made soon of another play to be given soon with Mrs. Garnet Ruck man and Mrs. Adelaide Kitchen as chairmen of the committee. Mrs. Ed Taylor, Mrs. Lucie Buell end Mrs. Minnie Bragg were reported 111. Mrs. Edna Borlne will entertain the Past Noble Grands club Friday after noon at her home. Senior Sewing Club Entertained Nations when the International Rela tlons group of the American Assocla- I tlon of University Women held its first meeting Wednesday night at the home of Mrs. Benjamin Johnson. The discussion was the background for the year's study of the drama as a means of International understand ing. Miss Helen Moor will entertain the group at her apartment at the Saca jawea Annex In two weeks. Founders' day will be observed by the La Grande City Council of Par ent Teacher Associations Monday af ternoon at 3:45 o'clock at the Saca Jawea Inn. A program will be fur nished by all the schools, after which tea. Will be served with Mrs. J. L. Ingle as chairman of the event. The program will Include two num- Mrs. El wood Hlatt entertained the Senior Sewing club of the M. I. A. Wednesday night at her home at 8 o'clock. . The evening was spent In sewing after which refreshments were served by the hostess to 20 guests. Mrs. Stanley Jenkins will entertain the club on Feb. 21. Couple Married In Walla Walla Curtis C. Smith, of La Grande, and Velma Irene Allison, of Baker, were married Tuesday In Walla Walla by Justice C. M. Wilbur after they had been Issued a marriage license at 'the county auditor's office. Three Speak At Group Meeting Mrs. O. A. Kopp, Miss Elleanor Ver non and Miss Alice Kllppel discussed the work of the International com mittee of intellectual co-operation, appointed through the League of Parish Dinner This Evening Members of St. Peter's parish will meet this evening at 6:16 o'clock at Honan hall for their monthly parish dinner. Cards and other entertain ment will be arranged for the after dinner hours. The committee In charge of the affair consists of Mrs. Henry Hill. Mrs. Adah Clark, Mrs. O. J. Edenholm, Mrs. Lela Jones and Mrs. Laura Conkey. Local Artists To Appear in Baker A group of La Grande artist will appear this evening before the Mac Dowell club at Baker under the di rection of Mrs. Jessie A. Kosklns. Miss Florence Day. head of the dram atio department at the .Normal sohool, will read "The Devil's Disci ple." by George Bernard Shaw, and the Symphony Singers will appear on the same program, accompanied by Mrs. Merlin Batley and directed by Mrs. Hosklns. Parker, Harvey St. Johns, J. E. Fitzgerald, Edna Hawley Stonebreaker and Myr tle Russell. Episcopal Guild Plans Reception St. Peter's Episcopal guild will meet on Feb. 7 with. Mrs. A. Milne at her home, and the event will be in the form of a reception for new mem bers of the parish. All women In the parish are asked to attend whether they ere guild members or not. Mrs. Milne will be assisted by Mrs. S, A. Wells, Mrs. John Camp, Mrs. Fred Cross and Mrs. Winnie William son. Home Department Sews on Quilts The Presbyterian Home department spent the afternoon sewing on quilts Thursday at the home of Mrs. J. M. Choate, 804 Main avenue. The quilts are 'being -made for relief, purposes. Refreshments were served by the hostess at a late hour to 24 guests assembled for the event. Election of officers will be the main business of the next meeting on March 1, and Mrs. Grace Rollins, Mrs. Nellie Robertson and Miss Young are members of the nominating com D. D. Hail Speaks At Auxiliary Meet D. D. Hall, state president of the Eagles lodge, addressed the auxiliary Thursday night at the Eagles hall. Plans also were made for a card party at the hall Feb. 15, and for a meet ing of the sewing club at Lane chapel Feb. 7. The meotlng will open at 10 o'clock and the day will be spent In sewing, with a potluck luncheon at noon. Mrs. Reba Huff was named as hostess. The next regular meeting of the auxiliary will be held on Feb. 15. Mrs. Raymond Gray. Hostess to Club Mrs. Raymond Gray arranged three tables of bridge for members of her club Thursday night at her home. Mrs. Lynn Larson was a guest. Prizes at contract bridge were awarded to Mrs. E.
