Here's First "Garden Chat" For This Year j (Continued From Page One) until it is three years old (from seed) should grow larger than a poppy which is sown in April and must pro duce Its 'largest bloom In three months or so. But does It In fav orable sections peony-flowered popples have approached the peony so closely in size arid beauty, It is beginning to be a question whether In another few years the popples may not take the lead. So the whole class of annual flow ers Is advancing, especially in size, variety of form and range of color, and each year they become more Important In the garden display. They seem, Indeed, to bo gaining on the perennials, In spite of the ad vantage of longer life which the lat ter have always possessed, i Plant breeding is carried on among perennials Just as much, and per haps by a larger number of breeders: but the annuals have a great ad vantage here in the very point which is a handicap in their individual development. Every year there Is a new generation of annuals, so that experimentation Is speeded up. A cnecK on last year's work Is made each summer, and new experiments are prepared. With perennials It always takes two years, and some times three to five, before the merit of a hybrid seedling can be known, and further improvement upon It be attempted. So look among the annuals this year for new colors, and new types, and try as many of the novelties as you have room for, in order to keep abreast of the great Improvements which are being made by the plant breeds. Choir Will Present Concert Next March (Continued From Pago One) bers including several ' of Jihe old nogro spirituals by Noble Cain, The A Cappella choir Is. composed of 00 picked voices from :the -various choirs and musical organizations of this city and has been rehearsing weekly under Mr. Loney'B direction. Mr.. Loney studied that type of di rection last summer at Northwestern university and the program promises to be one'of the outstanding musical events of the season.
