The later phrase was appropriated by the McKlnley cohorts as long ago as 1H00, and, ever since that date, It has. In the nubile mind, bean associated with the maintenance of our currency on a gold base. To the gold standardltes, tho retention of this -phraso Is Important, for Its use casts a stigma upon all other cur rency systems by clearly Implying that they are unsound. Advocates of tho "commodity dol lar" contend, however, that a mone tary standard which has resulted in tho unjust transfer of scores of bil lions of woalth, and which has been largely responsible for wrocklng busi ness, closing tho banks of the na tion, ond turning millions of men out of tholr Jobs has no legitimate claim to tho jihraso "sound money." They assert that the only type of currency which can legitimately be referred to as "sound" Is that which President Roosevelt proposes to estab lish namely, one which, year after year, will retain approximately the same purchasing power In terms of commodities In general. Until reoently. the friends of man aged currency have had almost un disputed possession 01 the words, "stable", "stabilize", and "stabiliza tion." The "stnblo dollar" has been understood to mean one having Its valuo so .regulated as to keep the price level constant. Now, however, when tlio gold stand ard advocates demand that tlie presi dent "stabilize" the dollar, they are urging him to depart from his avowed policy of keeping the purchasing power of the dollar constant ond to substitute Instead the old nollcv or defining the dollar as a fixed weight of gold.
