j?rom 1013 to 1917 the youngster
from Marlln, Texas, was the Idol bl
hla teammates as well as the grand
stand crowds. Although he weighed
only 130 pounds, he was. In the
words of Coach Dan McGugin, "a
very dangerous runner, aii excellent
forward passer, a good tackier and .a
great leader..'.' He - played varsity
quarterback four years and served a
captain c tlie team in 1910.' "''
jHls body is buried in France not
far from the point wnere he was shot
down in active combat. A lover of ex
citement, "Rabbit" put aside his foot
ball togs when the war drums beat
and enlisted in the aviation service.
He was commissioned a first lieuten
ant in the 69th Aero Squadron, First
Pursuit Group, arid was ordered to
the front July 17, 1918.
Less than a month later he was
killed. Details of his death never
ivere lenrned except that he flew be
yond the allies' lines to give battle
to tho German aero squadron known
as Rlchthafen'o Circus.
k;,Coach McQugin first suggested the
Statue and the movement was taken
up by V olub composed of many
generations of Vanderbilt athletes.
"Our hope," said McGugin, "Is that
we may be able to provide something
in the nature of a statue of 'Rabbit'

men from Vanderbllt in the World
war. A large number were from our
athletio fields and many of these
made the supreme sacrifice. It is my

est quarterback ever developed at
Vanderbllt. In 1915 he was the un
animous oholce for quarterback .on
the mythical All-Southern team.
