A "GREEN" CHRISTMAS Some of the old-timers are worried this week, thinking that La Grande will have a "black" Christmas. But we hasten to assure -them, as we look around and note new grass,, rich . fields of wheat, etc., it will be a or at least we prefer to look at time immemorial, signifies the shackling of bonds, the signal or a better luture. Yes let's civil it a "green" Christmas, and forget that worrisome stuff about "black" Christmas and what ,it is supposed to portend. : A WORTHWHILE OBSERVANCE ' The La 'Grandehotel this year is inaugurating a . hew type of Christmas -observance for: this city, a program of community songs and carols in the hotel lobby from 4:30 to 5:30 Sunday afternoon.' A splendid program has been arranged, and a cordial invitation extended to the entire community to participate the, lobby will hold one thousand, the management says. , - It is to be hoped that La Grande responds, and its people join their voices in a songful hour as the Yuletide ',d.raws near. Cloudy. , LABOR LEAGUE IS ORGANIZED IN LA GRANDE An organization, called the La Orande Labor League, has been or ganized hore and A. J. Hollen, secre tory, announced today that nearly 300 members have been signed up.' It Is to be a permanent! organization, he said. Mr. Hollen said the three main ob jects of the league Is to work for minimum wages of GO cents an hour, publishing of houTB worked In the county report as well as the wages paid, and putting men to work who are entitled to preference. . Mr. Hol len said that his organization felt that the county should pay 80 cents an hour to men employed to cut and saw wood, instead of the $2 rate a cord. . Sheriff S. J. McMlllin and a crew of deputies found the body with grappling hooks near a huge rock that extends back on the shore. The sheriff said the young woman appar ently fell off this rock Into the lake and was drowned. There were no marks on the body indicating violence waa the cause of death. Miss Dahlatrom was seen entering her car after a bridge party. The car was found' on the lake shore near where the body was recovered.
