Pa?eThr SOCIETYNOTES turn B !, soctatr Ml Mr Recruits Wives In Mine War Miss Florence Day Speaker At Meeting of Neighborhood Club Here on Tuesday jis Florence Day, director Ol dramatics at the Bastern Oregon Nor mal school, traced the development of drama through the past century yesterday afternoon at the La Grande Neighborhood! club meeting at the La Orande hotel. Her handling at the theme was from the historical point of view and her presentation was clever and instructive. The birth ot American drama was attended with great difficulty, she said.. The Puritans thought the theatre was an institution for saving souls and It was long before It could be accepted as an Institution of art. In 1860 In New York, Bamam had to call his theatre a lecture hall before he could draw a crowd. Of course, she added, the pre judices were not all of a moral na ture since the theatres were then no more than fire traps, America also was alow In Introducing- copy right laws and there was not incen tive .for dramatlcts to write plays. It was not until 18S1 that the inter national copyright law was passed. Miss Day traced the change from the romantic melodrama, "Bertha, the Sewing Machine Girl," and others, through the transition period, to the present realism which accepts the doctrine "Art for truth's sake." Of course, she pointed out, romance is lasting but today It Is not entirely divorced from realism. Expressionism, according to Miss Day, does not describe the modern drama, but Is only a part of It. E Stock companies In which the greatest players of America came to gether; the theatre . trust which brought about the star system of pro duction; road! shows gave way. to the little theatre, and the .little theatre which died down more or less with the advent ot talkies, were the main vehicles of the drama which Miss Day sketched. The gre-adoIescent group met with Mrs, Glenn Wagner with Mrs. E. E. Mrs. A, E. Chandler entertained 12 members of the Pythian Slaters club Tuesday afternoon at her home. Plans were made for piecing a- quilt at the next meeting which will toe held at the home of Mrs. A, E. Ertek son, 2108 Second street, Tuesday, Nov. 38, at 2 o'clock. ..
