Psalm 125: 2. WANDERING Vp$EN "A peculiar development of the relief situation in New York City, iind presumably elsewhere, is that whie the nu ber of homeless men is decreasing as business picks up, the number of homeless women Is increasing. The Welfare Council of New York reports that 15 per cent fewer men sought shelter in Junp than in May, while thfc number of Worried was 12 pel' cent greater. The increase in the number: of destitute women was at tributed to the fact that each day additional women and girls are reaching the end of their resources and. are pbliged to appeal o charity. And they are not the type regarded as "derelicts,' but are' former white collar workers, ' unskilled for the nwst part, but heretofore self-supporting, ' ' ' It has been estimated that the number of homeless worrit eh adrift in the United States has reached a total of 250,000. Many of them have token to the open road in their search for work. . . ; We have boon accustomed in, the past to large numbers of unemployed and wandering meni ti'ausieil; labor has in fact been useful iit many ways. But the addition of women to the ranks of this unfortunate army constitutes a new and dis turbing problem in our socinl readjustment.
