Showers Drench Valley; Rainfall Above Normal (Continued From Page One) the summer" season. Autumn bffictal lv begins on Saturday, Sept. 23, and tomorrow is the last day of the sum mer period. No damage lias been reported aue. to the rain; on the other hand, farm-1 ers generally have welcomed the . moisture. More stormy weather seemed in store, with small craft warnings fly infe at coast weather stations today as a new storm bore down on the Cdlumbia river district. The wind was rising steadily. A freak storm near Portland late yesterday killed one man and caused considerable damage before it blew itself out. Virgil Davis, 38, of Mol alla, was killed by lightning. With H. H. Kihchloe, he was cutting wood on the S. P. Lowe farm. He sought refuge under a toll fir tree. A bolt of lightning struck the tree, ripped down its trunk, killed Davis instant ly and seriously hurt Kinchloe. The gale crashed over Swan; Island airport, picked up a small plane and hurled it 100 yartls. Choose Your Food Colors If you are 'having a luncheon or bridgo supper and wish to make it pleasing to the eye as well as to the palate consider the color. Orange si ices where your color scheme is orange, green - garnlshlngs where it is green, or sliced tomatoes, red peppers, radishes where it is red. Thinking out color schemes is fun and has worthwhile results. -ILIS-CHflLMERS- Trnck type and air Tired Tractors. Combines, Implements, Road Machinery. NRA Compliance Work To Begin Today (Continued from Page One) committee, with additions: The plan is for the committee to check cer tain classes of business At the same time, with some one well grounded on the particular business in ques tion serving on the committee in the capacity of an expert. Messenger informed the local com mittee that compliance boards will be charged with the triple responsibili ties of mediation, conciliation end education. The boards to he "formed will hear complaints 6f non-compliance with the president's re-employment agree ment; petitions for exemptions un der paragraph 14 of the agreement; and petitions for permission to work longer hours to conform to existing union agreements, rather than the maximum hours allowable under the re-employment agreement. ' Each compliance board will consist of: two employees, one representing Industrial labor and one representing retail or wholesale trade employees; two employers, one in Industry and one in trade, a consumer's rapresen-, tativo, preferably a housewife; and a lawyer recommended by the state bur association. These six members will name a seventh, to be perman ent chairman. , Messenger also Issued a) warning to business men of Oregon and -Idaho that professional organizers were seeking to "muscle In" on a fat, soft living by posing as code experts aid ing business men uncertain of their duties under the NRA program. "These professional organizers ore first cousins of racketeers," declared Messenger, adding that Industries need not employ so-called "experts" to draft codes for submission to Washington, etc. "Big Story" Flops; Just Another Rumor (Continued From Page One) to Union Junction ana thence over the present lino to La Omnde. Tho rumor was first heard toy the Observer during the noon hour and neither Mr. Cochran nor Mr. Eber hai'd could bo reached. So a query was put on the A. P. wire, asking the Associated Press to contact "Che Portland and omona raurooa noaa quarters for any news. Pretty soon, Mr. Cochran denied selling the railroad. "We'd like to sell It, but we haven't any prospects In sight as yet," he remarked. Then came the final and crushing blows that sent the rumor Into tho waste basket: Omaha headquarters told the A P.: "Union Pacific headquarters any 'no foundation' for reported Unioii railroad purchase or other details." And In Portland, General Solicitor Spencer, said: "I can't conceive of such a thing. I believe I would hove heard! of It if such a thing were li cubatlng."
