LA GRANDE EVENING Oi&iSllVEK. LA GRANDE. ORE. Thursday, September 21, 193!. 'i ')' WILEY POST HURT IN CRASH TODAY the primaries, he tirobablv would not hatch, and It's a good bet that he will be a candidate to succeed him self next May unless the postmaster appointment faaierbUlse. There will not be so many races next May. Both Oregon senators are hold-overs, McNary's' term ending in 1637 and etelwer's lit 193S. ' State Senator Henry Hess1 term In the expire for a mains to bo seen. He admits tbnt he hasn't given the . matter Much thought as yet. 8o far there have been no reports of possible candidates In the Demo cratic party for Kiddle's post, and It is likely that If he decides to seek re-election, he will have little oppo sition In lus own party. In the county, only one office will be at stake that now held by County commissioner W. R. Led bet ter. There has been little talk about this office as yet, although : It Is pretty certain that If Led better runs again, he will have opponents prob ably both In tile primaries and the general election, If he surmounts the first obtAcie;- County commission' r posts are eagerly sought by various sections of the county, and,' ever time one is at stake, there are plenty of men anxiously seeking to oust the. Incumbent. All in all, one may regard the next six months as a time for candidates to do a lot of fence, bull ding. The sad part about It all la that on tie third Friday In May, a lot of tiie fences will be strewn to the fcjtr corners of the winds, and some of enter his name on the ballot. If the appointment comes latsr, he could resign and the election laws provide legislature will couple of years. not Fred B. Kiddle, president of the state senate and "epresentlng Union, UmatUla and Morrow counties, la now completing his present term. Whether he will be a candidate re ways ana means lor a party to proV viae new candidate. .. . ' Bulldlnga destroyed Included the Gothord general merchandise store, an 85-year-old landmark, several, dwellings adjoining it and the county' garage In which considerable stata highway machinery was stored. The Ravensdale hotel and a few small buildings escaped. Damage was esti mated by town officials at between $50,000 and 100.000. - - HEPRKRRION' (IRAIlllATfeS" II.A C'OiJ.fetiE ENTRANCE NOBMAN, Okla. (PC Many Stu dents who were graduated from high School two or three years ago but did not enter college are plan ning to enroll this full, George Wad sack, University of Oklahoma reg istrar, reports. Inquiries regarding enrollment du ing the summer exceeded any during a similar period In the past four years, Wadsack laid. LACK OF PATRONAGE LOWERING CHANCES (Continued from Page One) too small for that hand to enter. In what patronage he may have had to offer, his home county friends have evidently been forgotten in ef forts ;to build future strength else where. Then there is another angle that both Democrats and Republicans are pondering about. It Is: What has Pierce done for this section 01 the second congressional district? Asking It that way. It is a bit difficult to find an answer. If the Meadow Brook project were to become a reality, It might cost a different light on the situation. Some former local consti tuents are beginning to wonder il Pierce really oarrles the strength he was expected to. Pierce, himself, unquestionably realizes that all is not well along the battle front, A few days ago at Klamath Falls he announced ha would be a candidate for re-election one of the first to toss the well known hat Into the ring. The La Grande congressman does not intend to let any grass grow under his feat as far as his campaign lor re-election Is concerned I He's on the go much of the time these days, and the pa pars are well supplied with news of his sneech-maklng. So far, In spite of rumblings in .his own Dartv. there has -been no mention of a possible opponent in the primary elections; but over on the Republican side of the fence and the Republicans elected Pierce; Just as much as did the Democrats; the storv Is different. At least ono man who would make a strong can didate. Is considering making the race. Jay Upton, of Bend, although he hasn't committed himself, Is known to toe considering the situa tion, and he hasnt been overlooking any opportunities -to make speeches and public appearances. It is quite possible that he will become a can didate and If 'he wins the Republi can nomination, he will be more than halfway along the route to put ting his feet under a desk In the United States house of representa tives; Now for the other item, of par ticular Interest the La Grande postmastershlp. Ralph Huron, In cumbent and appointed many years ago under a Republican administra tion, still has about three-quarters of a year to serve. Every indication is that there will be no appointment for his position until his term is near on end. At the same time, Indica tions point pretty largely to Victor Eckley, state representative from Un ion county, as the next postmaster. Eckley. himself, has nothing to say about the matter, but his friends feel ... . 1 I .n fnV t.ht tnac ne is uie mgiiu federal position. If Eckley Is appointed and it would set well with the entire valley there will be the position he now holds In the legislature wide open for candidates. Certainly there will toe a rush in that event, but unless ,. . j his nMsnni jiCKiey steps qowji nvin post, ho Is expected to be unopposed In the Democratic primaries, and re gardless of his Republican candidate If there is one Is regarded as cer tain of re-election (at least as cer tain as the word means when applied to politics). If Eckley Is appointed, or assured of appointment as postmaster before What Are the fall s t y 1 e s ? And who hns the finest selec tion ?
