Thursday, August 21, 1933 LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER. LA GRANDE. ORE. Page Five ) SIXTY FIRES IN WHITMAN FOREST DURING SUMMER BAKER, Ore. (Special) Sixty fires, of which 40 wero caused by lightning, have been started on 'the Whitman national forest to date this year, for est officials have announced, : Fourteen of the fires were started by smokers, one by use of a railroad and three from campflres. Two list ed as miscellaneous were started from burning buildings. The total area burned over amounts to only acres with damage esti mated at approximately $20. This figure does not Include a stamp mill burned at the Black Hawk niljie. The 'largest area covered by any one fire was only three acres. The small burned-over acreage this season is due to more or less favor able weather conditions and the effi cient use of organized crews of men from the O. C. C. camps. Out of the 20 man-caused fires six convictions have been secured In justice courts In Baker, Richland and John Day. All of the convictions wero for leaving burning campflres or throwing away lighted cigarettes. The Whitman forest has had more fires to date this year than any of the other 20 national forests in Oits gon and Washington. "It 1b 'hoped that with the con tinued co-operation of the public us-, lng the national forest for camping, hunting and picnicking we will have a record year so far as man-caused fires are concerned with respect to the area burned and the damage done to timber," Phil Paine, who is in charge of fire fighting on the Whit man forest, said.
