' 1932 Campaign Has Good Points By Byron Price At the end of every national cam paign, serious-minded persons are apt to bo asking themselves whether poll tics Is getting worse or beter. Well, what about 1032? Viewing the case now, while the animosities of battle still linger, a good many commentators are Inclined to be pessimistic. They are appalled at the grant quantities of slush and bunk dished out to the voter, and at the .free and easy Way In which charges of demagogy and unfair tac tics and even plain lying have been bandied about In the final weeks of the campaign. t They are unanimous in their con clusion that some of the materials which have gone Into the fabric of 1032 politics never will be a source of prldo In years to come, either to the respective parties which sponsored them, or to the American people. But those .who are Inclined to be worried and discouraged at the cur-, rent level of politics may modify their verdict somewhat when they have cooled off and remembered the past. Much that has been said this year was cribbed directly from the text books of other campaigns. As bad, and In some Instances far worse, ap pears to have happened more than oncti before. There were opportunities, how ever, when the British heir might have helped fix rumor on himself. Thcro was, for example, the first dancing party given for the visitors. But Wales tangoed most of the time with Mrs. Clark Kerr, wife of the British minister. It was George who was the partner of Ingrid. Again, at the first formal dinner at the 'Castle, Ingrid took George's arm as her escort to the table. England, ond Sweden olrcady are linked through royal marriage. Thc young subjects of the present crop of rumors are, ln fact, great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria. In grld's mother was Princess Marga ret of Connaught, daughter of Vic toria's second son, tho aged Duke Icf Connaught. This granddaughter of England's great queen married the present crown prince and bore him all his children. 1920. In many states, in far greater meas ure than in ony other recent elec tion, party ties dissolved almost com pletely. For the first time, on old - line minor party had a really respectful hearing on the part of the great moss of American voters. Although fthe tost majority disagreed with htm, the Socialist nominee became oy popular consent a reai iiguro in the campaign. On Its purely negative side, it has seen fewer chargers of outright cor ruption, of illegal use of money, than most of Its predecessors among the presidential years. Of course this may be only a tem porary Improvement, due to the scarcity of campaign funds. But if the 111 wind of the depression Is to be blamed for tho harm It has done in politics, why not give It creC.it as well for the good It has done? 8 Persist in Europe and Princess Ingrid They Are cousins Prince Georgo, of course, traces bock to Victoria through his father, tho present ruler and his grandfather thc late Edward VII. The relationship figures down to tho thirtt degree of couslnship bo tween George and Ingrid. Stockholm has become accustomed, of lote years to a lot of this sort of weighing and balancing. The crashes of thrones since tho world war has restricted the royal marriage circle materially and the daughters of the House of Bernadotte have occupied an increasingly prominent place in it. Ingrid, despite her youth, has not been exempt. She was mentioned frequently when it became known that Crown Prince Frederick of Den mark was ready to marry. Another rumor had her engaged to Count Nils von Rosen. Miss Nel son, who was accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Merlin Batley, re cently returned from studying music in Austria and Germany, and an en tertaining feature of her program was tho presentation of two groups of folk songs from those countries. She also sang an American group which included "Mam'selle Marie," a negro spiritual; "Shoes', by Catherine Locfchart Manning; "The Cuckoo Clock," and "Do I Like Love?" Miss Johnson also furnished three groups, the first of which included "A Simi lar Caso, My Rival," by Kipling, and "Specially Jim." by Bessie Mor gan; the second, "The Creation" from "God's Trombone,' by James Wen dell Johnson; and the third, "Be tween Two Lovea" and "Da Morican Girl," both by T. A. Daly. A large audience composed of patients at the sanatorium and many La Grand era onjoyed the program.
