But Jerry Calhoun. , who with Stevens and Emory Matties tit truhio to outwit Ash-, ii'ooil. ftitcmfs to marry Nancy himself. Chapter 27 SECRET MARRIAGE A SHWOU1) rose abruptly. "Unless I nin too optimistic," ho chuckled, "another guest Is nr. riving, ono who will he glad to give spiritual comfort to those who ile al It." He looked point blank at Luccl, who cursed him. . Ten minutes later, the. v'ntfabla host presented tho Hcv. Dr.vtfcwel liu Tllberliigton to bis guests. The minister was a short, thin man. with a bass voice which, being out ot proportion to his stature, 'startled those who heard It for (he first time. Ashwuod regarded him with 111 restrained delight. It was evident that Dr. Tltlierington had read Ihe fulsome accounts of the spectacular Itlditaplngs und recognized the vic tims r.s Ihey were Introduced. Uy the lluie the smiling cripple pro filed "One-shot l.uccl. Flower of .:hica.;o (lungdom," the minister trembled, naturally. "And now," suggested Ashwood -muvely. "I must Insist that you rest. Your Journey has, no doubt, been fatiguing. Alfred, show Dr. rithciiugtoii to bis room." Tho minister turned and followed tho steward. . ' "Son of loo bad," ventured the detective mildly, "to make sporl of tho little feller like that. I'm going m 10 see If I can make litre feel a Utile eusier In his mind. He's prob ably nil upset." Ashwood bowed sardonically. "Peace be with you, brother," he pronounced blandly, the drawn-down gravity of his mouth belled by the col)ing twinkle In his eyes. Stevens turned abruptly and left the room. Walking through the long hall of the guest's wing, he knocked at the door which he guessed would be tho minister's. There was no on swer, so he entered without Invita tion. Dr. Tltlierington was soated on a straight-backed cbalr, anx Iinsly looking out of the window Into the fast darkening twilight His face was palo, his eyes large and round,. but he was In full control of bis emotions. . . "Well, Reverend, how goes It?" Stovens seated himself on the edge of the bed and studied the other for a moment before broaching his sub ject. "See here. Reverend, you may. havo forgotten who 1 am, amongst all the Introductions of a few min utes ago. I'm Stevens, an operative ot tho. United States Treasury d partment." The little man looked at him dully. "What are you doing In this don ot thieves, then?" he Inquired. "Trying to get away and put tho leader of the crooks In prison. There hasn't been a break I could take ad vantage of yet, bo I'vo had to bide my time." He stopped to marshall his thoughts. Then, abruptly, "You came to marry Ashwood to Miss Wentworth, didn't you?" Dr. Tltherlngton's long Angora wound and unwound the long black ribbon which hung from his nose glasses. "Yes," he replied at length. "But I am not sure that I shall conduct tho ceremoney, now." "I know you won't!" Tho minister stared curiously at tho detective. He was gradually emerging from the fog ot depression which had engulfed him. "What do you mean by that?" he demanded, "Just that. The cripple Is going to abduct that girl against her will. In a momont ot whole-hearted gen erosity, he offered to marry her, the way a feller tosses a bone to a dog. Dut whether you marry them or not. he's going to take her away unlest wo can find some way to stop It." "Perhaps, then," decided the other, "it would be better to marry them." "It would, If the whole affair couldn't be stopped, Out It can. There Is a Una young feller here who got Into this Jam Just to rescue bor. Ho has offered to marry her before Llmpy gets around to It, hoping that will stop him from carrying her off." "I shall hare nothing to do with It. The whole thing Is entirely too fantastic" The black ribbon was hopelessly snarled, ' C Charles Johnson, of Pilot Rock. In Its simple form it Is merely an abnor mal enlargement of the gland, with out any appreciable alteration la 1U function. Goiter, however, may be associat ed with an under-functioning or over-functioning of the thyroid. In instances ' when the thyroid falia to secrete adequately we may have the condition known as my xedema, in which there is a low ering of metabolism. A person suffering myxocdema may gain an excessive amount of Well," observed the old man, quietly, "from whoro I ' live layman, It you'd have w Eivo up your church, would look better to mo than a dead minister." , Dead?" Dr. Tlthorlngton gasped audibly. ' Deadcr'n boll, begging your par don. You don't meet guys like Ash? wood at Wednosday afternoon guild meetings, you know. He'd worry himself ovor killing you as much as he did over bumping oft those twq gorillas of One-shot's. Maybe less. I take It he doesn't care much about ministers. 1 might mention. In pass ing, that two men got their throats cut last night. One of 'em 1b Just the other side of that partition. It you are alive tomorrow you will probably read a burial service or two." . And you a government detec tive aloud for these outrages?" Tho minister blinked rapidly In his Indignation and rolled his eyes toward the partition. "Just now. yes." admitted Steve patiently. "No use committing sui cide., like you're going to. becuuse I don't like what I can't help Now listen, you can do the girl a good turn by marrying Per to the nice young feller who'll be running much more risk of getting knocked oft than you will, If yo'ur conscience will allow you, though, to bitch her up to Ashwood, go to It! Me, I'd hate to live to old age remembering it. It I was to do a 111 Ins like that." Ho' roso woarlly and turned to ward the door. A sudden gesture from the deflated little clergyman stopped him. "What about the license?" ven tured the clergyman weakly. ."I'll take tho responsibility for that," the other assured him. "If you're going to swallow the whole thing, don't gag at the details." Mr. Wltherington winced. "Bring the couple to me," he agreed llnally. "I prefer to meet the wrath of a criminal rather than the sorrow of my Maker." Stevens, In his delight, smote the other on the back' with so lusty a whack that the little man coughed painfully. Then ho went tor the bride, bridegroom and Emory, whom ho bad decided should be best man, , Ashwood looked up from his book as ; Mr. Tltlierington, Jerry,, and Nancy Emory and Stevens trooped, into the living room. For the first time since Jerry had known blm tho cripple seemed, for a moment, to bavo been caught off guard. In Intuitive suspicion ot the unexpect ed, his eyes flashed from one to the other of the entering group, as though to read In their minds the riddle ot their unusual appearance. "Is this a committee waiting upon mo with a petition?" he bowed, at last. "You all have the guilty ex pressions of conspirators on your faces." A note of Impatience crept Into Ills voice, "Come, unveil the mystery." Jorry stopped forward and found that Steven had unobtrusively shouldered his way to his side. Ham ilton, shuffling his cards absently, was regarding them wltb Idle curl: oslty. Mallory, a highball half-way. to his lips, stood by the center table gazing at them In astonish ment Martin's white face, dim in a corner, was turned their way. l.uccl, In an easy chair, made the pilot think of a crouching panther. What was It that had warned them of a crisis? "Gentlemen," Jerry's voice was clear and crisp. "May I present my wife, Mrs. Calhoun?" Ashwood qujvored as though he had been slapped. The blood Blowly drained from his face until his cheeks were as colorless as his hair. Ho looked nearer fifty than thirty, except for his eyes. They seemed to contract, somehow, until they were mero slits In the parchment of his dead-white face. Lnccl roso from his chair, his hot littlo eyes as venomous as a copper head's. He took three steps forward and then, as though Impatient to get bis bands upon the man who had robbed him of Nancy, he rata pulled forward, his speed Increas ing with every slep ho took. Jerry whirled and braced himself to meet Ihe attack. Ills gray eyes were as hard as polished steel. Ills mouth was Bet In a crooked linlf smlle. The long anticipated conflict was at hand and ho was content tc have It so. (Copyright.
