Stevens' j voice was almost casual, "No, nor ammunition, either," de clared '.re guard, ". j ' "Huh." The detective scratched himself In uielnuclioly meditation. "Sort of upsetting having someone running around with a craze for cutting people's throats. ' Already there's $160,000 of our reward plumb out of sight. Don't see how we can collect on Williams, now. And It we aren't careful there'll be others get it,, too." , ' "It was one of the men ln the house," Stated Ashwood, positively. "My men are tough, hut they aren't cutting thronts. If they wanted to kill, 'they have guns." '' "VU, huh." Stevens was noncom mittal. "Well, thero ought to tie some tracks around," The cripple snapped on his searchlight and the three cut a wide circle about the body. At last they picked up a trail, a single pair oftrocks which led through the sand and the sawgrass directly to the house. ' ' "Did you walk here?" demanded Ashwood of the' guard; "No, boss, ' cut around to the right, there." ' Stevens strolled over in the di rection ' Jndlcatod and proved the accuracy ot the guard's statement. Then he returned f,o J.li,e suspected footprints and 'examined.; each qt them minutely as the three worked their slow way to the house; " "No use," mourned the detective when they had almost-reached the porch steps. "We can't tell d thing. This sand's loose as dry ashes Can't tell whether these prints are from a number seven shoe or a twelve. Jjet's see If hp went through the living room or Info a window." The tracks led directly to the porca, steps. A few gralus of sand made a faintly distinguishable path on the libra rag ot the living room inn '.hoy did not extend Into the hull. Nor was there any way ot be ing certain that the outside guard had not brought the sand Id when he had come to give. the alarm. "Iol's have a drink, Steve," sug gested Ashwood, pressing a button. "In llio morning I'll search" the house until a qeedle couldn't re main hidden In a mattress. We'll turn np. that gun and then decide what to do with the man woo- has it" Tho steward, Alfred, appeared, as nent and elDclent as though he wore Just coming on duty after a full night's sleep. Vsbwood gave Ills order. "Tell you what I'll do, Umpy," sold the detective slyly, "I'll match you for the gun." Ashwood scared nt him. "Uh, ' huh," repeated Stevens, comfortably, "I'll match you for It. You need t to prevent your prison ers from getting loose or knock ing each other off. 1 need It as sort of a key to get out of here my self." The cripple wotched Alfred placo a heavily loaded trny on tho table. Ho poured out two stiff highballs with methodical' care and passed ')uc to the detective. "Do you know where that gun la, Stove?" Ashwood's face was set In deep lines as he studied the un troubled countenance of the other. "No not yet, beyond the fact that the murderer has cached it away whero wc can't llnd.lt and he can!" "Al right, then, who' Is the mur derer? Mallory? Luccl?" The cripple's thin fingers drum med r-stlessly against tho frosted tumbler. Stevens shook bis glass to cool the highball more swiftly. "That's up to both of us to find out," be said after a satisfying taste of the excellent whiskey. "I got a hunch that If we don't And out pretty soon, he's going right on enioylng bis killing ag. Besides, I want that gun and so do you. Finders keepers." . "Let's try to find him together," suggested Ashwood grimly. "We both owe that much to tho others. So far as tho gun's concerned, It would do you no good if you did find it. If 1 even suspect you have It. I'll have you searched, hide and hair, every twenty minutes, day ai.d night, until you leave this Is land with my permission. But It we Giant Whale On Exhibition Here At Freight Depot Thousands of Americans who have never scon ft whnle und. never ex pected'to see one of these largest pf living creatures, are now enjoying the opportunity as a result of the trans continental tour of the famous whale of San Clemente. '" The whale Is on exhibition here ln a ' specially construe tec! railroad car occupying a sidetrack at the freight depot. Weighing 72 tons and meas uring more than 65 feet from Its massive head to the powerful tail, the whale presents a spectacle of unusual Interest. t don't find the killer, there's likely to be more bell let loose on this Is land than I bad anticipated,, even In my rosiest dreams." "You should have thought ot that," the other reproved him gently, "before you brought them all down In this beat, five men aud one girl. You remind me ot the kid who didn't know It was loaded." ' "Do yon (hluk I care one single damn about those two who have had their throats cut?" demanded the cripple scornfully. "Not a suap of my lingers. But I will not have my plans ruined. Do you under stand?" Stevens raised his glass and sipped slowly, contemplntlvoly.Asti wood retljjcd bis own tumbler and watched (he old man with moody eyes. At lost, tired ot the silence, he shrugged and pushed himself out of his chair. "Steve, it's mighty refreshing, once In a while, to see a man who sticks to his Ideals." He took a turn or two across the room, his extension sole giving forth o hol low sound as he walked. ."But I'm ceitalnly afraid that I'm going to have to kill you before this affair Is over." "Now don't go getting yourself all upset about that," pdvlsed the little man placidly. "Fact Is, I been shot at so many times I've sort of come to the conclusion that wben 1 die It'll be with my best nightie on and a hot water bottle at my feet." , He learned over and selected a cigar from the box on the table. He broke It and put halt ot It In his mouth. His jaws moved violently tor a moment. Then a bulge ap peared under his left cheek.' "You know, Umpy," be said wltji some 'difficulty as bo aetled back In the deep chair. "It it wasn't for a coup.ie of llttjo wrinkles that run, :the wrong way in your, brain, you'd be a r'ght nice teller to know. What happened: did somebody drop you on your head whon you were a baby?" "We're all crooks In a greater or lessor degree, Steve," replied Ash wood. "The only reason you think 1 am Just a little crazy Is that I use my head and select primes that appeal to mo instead of those that would bore me. Why are a few" spectacular, Intelligent crimes more dreadful than many small, dreary ones?" He rose and hobbled reles.ilj back and forth across the ruom. . "Is It because I break laws thai you ask ine If I'm a little cruzy. oi is it because I don't break thnso particular laws that are disregard ed by everybody? In a Kenerally lawless ' society, 1 break laws. Rlght-o! But I do so Intelllgenlly. observing the same privilege ot plcklng the laws I wish to disre gard as do those who break the laws ot the Constitution of the traffic laws, or what not." Stevens sighed pensively, "It 1 was a Judgo, l.lmpy. bet you could talk me, KHo giving you a room and bath at the funny house Instead of a chair In the dcnili houso. It's right comforting to know that you aren't tho kind of a feller who'd shoot mo in the bnrk when I'm not looking. And for Mint very reason I'm going to send o swell bunch of flowers, to your funeral. It I'm not retired anil In California by that time, I'll come and walk In your process, on." Thoir eyes met squarely and they both grinned. On oppnslie sides ot society's fence, these tv.-o. yet each knew and 'respected the other's measure as a man. "One more drink, Steve." sug gested the cripple, "Then to bed I havo much to do tomorrow." "Fair enough," smiled tho older man. "No water In mine." . Soon after breakfast, 'Ashwood's great amphibian nosed out of lis waterside hangnr, shook the entire island with the full-throated roar nl Ita mighty engine anil, after a splashing race across the water, soared away In a purring flight toward tho north. "Let's get a little breath of air beforo tho heat closes In," sug gested tbo detective os ho. Jerry and Emory looked away from the dot in the sky which was (he fast vanishing plane. "Maybe a little stroll In the air now will help us to stand the beat later." There was an undertone ot urgency In the old man's voire which caused the two flyers to fol low him down the porch steps and out among tho palms. "Wo'vo got to crash this place protty soon, npw," ho declared, as the three sat in the little circular patch ot shade beneath a palm "There's hell to pay." .(Copyright. Dial Press) Jerry proposes a surprising plan for Nancy's reicue, tomorrow. In a perfect eta to of preservation, accomplished by expert embalmera. the whale Is revealed as one of the finest specimens ot tho finback vari ety ever captured. , Back of tho capture" of the whale several' weeks ago near Sou Clemonte Island, off the southern eosst ot California, Is the story ot a battle which veteran whalers have declared to be the hardest and most thrilling in the history ojr wnallug. The whale battled furiously against his fate for several . hours; often threatening to wreck ' the whaling boat and claim the lives of its crew. The fight started when' the bomb ln the head of the first harpoon fired Into the whale's body failed to ex plode. It was' not until the whaling crew, completely exhausted and ready to abandon the fight, worked the wholo Into position Ifor a second shot that the struggle was ended. The tour of the whale, according to reports, has caused a revival of specu lation concerning many of the facts about whales which have thus far baffled scientific inquiry. Although the whale Is an air breath er, he can dive a mile deep and re main there for an hour at a time without coming up for another huge lungful. How he does this and how ho resists the tremendous pressure of the water in the lower depths of tho sea. are among the things that stu dents of natural history have never been ablo to discover. The whale will bo' n La' Grande until Wednesday night.
