Its progress may be ar rested and to ; some degree rem edied by the very means by which the- disease might be prevented, namely, lessening the strain, , to which hie circulatory system is! subjected. ;;' By requiring the patient to rest In, bed,, the heart and the circula tory system are relieved largely of the burden of pumping against gravity. ; , . . .'..;,, This affects Immediately the load tfhe circulatory system is called on to sustain, , . Parents PLAYING PRINCESS By Alice Juitsrtii .PeAle A mother Is distressed because her little girl plays constantly, to the I exclusion of all more wholesome, j realistic play, a game of make be lieve In which "she Is a princess. As princess -she is surrounded by adorning servants and a devoted lady- ! ln-waltlng who anticipates her every j wish. She Is, of course, the most Deau- . tiful croature In the whole wide . world. She haa long golden hair and j she wears tlresEe3 of gold and silver' ..'sewn .with d,lamondsu She glances o " wonderfully that people 'crowd about the pnlnce gates to catch a glimpse of her. j Thlg kind of make believe goes on ! day after day for hours together. The dolls,' the housekeeping toys, tho ' skates and balls that her mother had j hoped would stimulate her to a more natural kind of play either are re- j Jccted or pressed into the service of the princess game. Her mother won- ! tiers how she can meet this situation. Tha difficulty obviously is that this little girl needs so much to enjoy a direct outlet for her self love and her wish for power that the more usual child game3 make no appeal to her. An attempt to prevent her from playing the particular phantasy which she has made for herself would not help. Her imagination, her energies would continue to be occupied with it In secret. The only r?al help In such instances ia to discover and change those ele ments In the child's real life which are so profoundly unsatisfactory that she Is driven to create for herself such unreal pleasures. Lack of genuine affection from one or both parents, a feeling of inferior ity brought about by criticisms or comparisons with other children, ca- jjcclnlly a brother or sister, are among the possible causes. Home, in Barrack Limerick, Irclnnd, took over the famous old barracks which face the Shannon river at Thomond bridge, and erected 27 workers' homes on part of the site and converted the buildings Into three-room flats. The ancient wnlls of the fcastle, which were built In the reisn of King John, are preserved under the pro visions of the national monuments act. Worthy Philanthropist William Tuke, nn English philan thropist, horn 200 years ago, found ed the "Hetreal," under the man agement of ihe Quakers and discov ered what are called the best mod ern methods of dealing with the In sane. Emory plans to buy an up' to-date airplane. Chapter 8 "YOU'VE BEWITCHED ME" TTriE Implacable glare ot tlie afternoon sun hammered down upon the low, rambling house. The blazing light, undtmmed by any cloud, turned the white shell beach Into a dazzling Incan descence which burned its way Into one's eyeballs like a white hot needle. The palm trees themselves seemed to find the oppressive heat unbearable, bo dry and brown and weary-looking were their rattling leaves. . Their golllwog-Hke clus ters gave little shade 'and less rest to the eye, serving only to accen tuate tho glare of the brassy sky and the burnished iridescence of the flattened sea. A girl stood in a tiny patch of shade at one end ot the porch, cow ering from the nll-encompasalng heat. She was young and beauti ful, with the straight; slender fig ure of a hoy. For the thousandth time she studied the scores of Islands to north, east and south, then turned her gaze toward the sharply-edged segments ot horizon between two Islands to tho west. The flash of hope that always light ed those brown eyes when she be gan her frequent surveys faded into hopelessness. She leaned against the porch railing, forgetting everything but the heat and the ever-growing ten sion In the house. : Those little patches ot mangrove-covered sand might never know the touch of hu man foot nor those shimmering waters the splash of paddle or bent ot propeller. The twenty-acre Island upon which tho houso stood seemed utterly lost amid an unin habited achlpelago of Island-dotted sea. The madhouse of which this porch was a part might burst Into flames and disintegrate under the torrid heat, together with Its com pany of desperate men, and the outside world might .never know. She shivered, although the very air scorched her like the blast from an open door. An hour more before the malev olent sun would drive Into the sea with tropic haste. Then one would be able to breathe. ' Tho tension which bound the Island like an Iron band would relax. The men would become almost normal, re membering their stations in life before they were set down on this sun-ridden, hate-mad spot. "Enjoying yourself. Nancy?" A sardonic voice 'came from behind her shoulder. She wheeled, her hand on her breast. "Are you drunk, again, Mr. Mal lory?" she challenged him coldly. Mallory teetered unsteadily on bis feet His close-clipped red hair was awry, his jadegrecn tyes bloodshot His bma ' shoulders sagged wearily. Lack ot exercise a, than heard a sharp, ri AW y crack. Good Never Results Tliero ta no good result when hatred Is returned for hatred, RrMllpr; and too much drink was taking Its toll upon a figure which had, but three weeks ago, been lithe and hard-muscled. Hero there were no polo fields with spirited ponies and pretty women, no hand ball courts witb showers and experienced rub bers, no golf links with frosted highballs at the nineteenth hole. Of all these, only two were left, the highballs and one pretty woman. So to both he had devoted himself assiduously, the drink without re straint, the woman to the limits ot her patience... Now he stared open ly at Nancy and smirked. "No, not drank yet," ho said. "Perhaps a little later." Ills mood changed suddenly. Mis irritable voice betrayed a man whose nerves were frayed and jangling. "What else would one do to hctp him for get the passing of time In this hell hole? Hamilton, with his blamed solitaire, Martin, sitting thore Dice a bump on a log until you could smash his face in just to make him speak. Williams, stealing every chance- to make calf's eyes at you. And every time we take a walk toward the beach or the hangar two or three guards watch ns with their hands In their bulg ing pockets, hoping that we'll do rather Ing something that will give them a little gun practice. It you wercn t here, I'd have run amuck long ago. 1 will yet, if something doesn't hap pen to break the monotony!" 'That will he very helpful to me. The girls voice was nenvy with sarcasm. "You lill mo with admiration tor your self-control.' "See hero, Nancy,"' ho com plained querulously. "It's all your fault. Vou know I've not boon my self. I'm madly In love with you and you treat mo like a dog. I've loved you ever since your opening night at the Criterion, two years ago. I've tried. God knows how many limes, to meet you. But you never went out on parties, never met people. And now we're to gether here, 1 can't think of nny thing but you." "You've thought of nothing else," she countered scornfully, "hut the heat and the liquor and the chances of escape. Havo you given any thought to your wife, lately?" "My wife? I've told you that my wife and I have been separated for years!" he declared tempestu ously. "I'll have her get a divorce tho moment we return to New York." New York! A million miles away from this madness. It hardly seemed to exist. "That might bo a favor to yotir wife," she said drearily, "but please, please, let's talk of some thing else!" "Nancy!" Ills voice. wan vibrant with Intensity. "I can't you've bewitched me! You arc" In another Instant she was In his arms, kicking, hammering wilh her little fists at his burly chest and shoulders, squirming silently to break bis hold. Ills kisses fell upon her cheek. A guard, strolling along the beach, stopped and watched them In frank, cynical en joyment. She was sick and giddy. Then, suddenly, she felt rather than heard, a sharp, ringing crack. The straining arms sagged as Ills body relaxed, became limp and settled toward the floor. She was dragged down with him. Strong hands seized her by tbe shoulder: and Jerked her back to her feet (Copyright. Dial Preli) Nancy escapes from one pursuer to find herself facing another, tomorrow. Suddenly Nancy felt.
