"Say. Joe' he exclaimed, "do you notice that they have demand ed 100,000 apiece as a 'board bill' and make no promise to release those people when they have picked up the money!" "I'll say so! replied the other. "Looks to me as though they might collect $100,000 a month, or a week, maybe, Just so long as they can keep out of the way of the cops." "All I've got to say," murmured the first man. thoughtfully. "Is that It's a devil of a good story. It's a brand new racket tn kidnaping." "It Is," agreed Joe. "What's more, 1 don't think the whole piece has broken yeL My guess Is that there'll bo more kldnaplngs to come." Shortly after eight-thirty on Thursday morning, Jerry Calhoun swung lustily on the walnut propel ler of bis old biplane, skipped nimbly away from the sudden death that lurked In the glistening arc of the' whirling stick, and listened wftb vast satisfaction to the pulsat ing, deep-throated back of the eight-cylinder engine. Then, clam bering into the rear cockpit, be grinned happily at Emory, who was already strapped Into the passen ger's cockpit between the wings. A Jolting, careening rush across the rutted ground, a broathtaklDg zoom and they were off, climbing fast and banking over toward the east as they cleared the telephone wires at the end of the field. To their right, as they mounted blgber and higher into the Inverted blue bowl of the sky, lay the shimmer ing expanse of turquoiso Atlantic ocean. At last, after six disheartening days during which there had been little or nothing accomplished, they wero on a trail which mlgh' lead them to Nancy Wentworth and to action. The passing ot time bad not softened, by the slightest de gree, the bitter feeling of defeat caused by those few disastrous mo ments on the Merrick road. On the contrary, jorry'b longing for a re turn action bad grown with the hours. Nor had the knowledge that somewhere that wonderful, clear eyed girl was awaiting rescue added anything to Jerry's peace of mind. In periodic momonts ot reason, Jerry recognized what a quixotic task he had set for himself and for the violent, adventure-loving Em ory. With tho police, man-hunters by trade, "lending every energy In bopo ot llndlng some clue to the senders of the Injolent ransom letters, how could ho and Emory expect to buc ceed? They had no access to con lldonllal information, no standing as oDlclal Investigators. Their chief assets were- an Intense personal Interest In the chase, tho ability, through their flying, to cover ground rapid ly and adequate funds. Cutting across the easterly arm or Great Soa.h bay with fifteen thousand feet beneatb them, tbey followed the tiny white thread of s.inri which separates Moriches and fihlntiocock bays from the aca.
