Mra, Arthur -Wallace, John Lyons, and Mrs. Tex Williams were trans acting business in Wallowa Monday. Mra. Alice Smith left Saturday for Portland and McMlnnvllle where she expects to visit for some time. Frank Carper left Saturday aa a delegate to the state grange at Sil ver ton, Chester Oorbett finished shearing his sheep Tuesday. He and Dunne and Ray Henderson have done all the shearing by hand. Miss Myra Gor bett has been doing their cooking. The sheep are on Middle Point. Frank Lindsey came in Tuesday from his home in La Grande and has been busy planting late garden at the A. E. Carper place. Mr, and Mrs, C. T. Lindsey, of La Grande, were here Wednesday and Thursday visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Carper. Lee Smith Is spending a week with his daug h ter, Mrs. Maurice Tecl on eiderdown. There was nervousness In the movement. It I'd had the nest-egg In the bank that most people think I have Instead of an overdraft aud a drawertul of bills I would have gone off with him this evening," she whispered. "I wouldn't have asked where he was taking me. A room at Mrs. Blgger's would have been better than a sjilte at the Rltz, with him. But id no choice, honest ly. I must get ihy affairs In order, aiid 1 must save. If I work harder and don't play at all, 1 can do It In the year. I will do It . . . Don t yoii beljeve that It I hadn't been such a fool with my money I would have thrown up the job and gone with Ed?" "No," said Jenny gently. "I think that there would still have been something In you that would have tried to got both Independence and marriage as well. You're generous, dearest, but you're greedy, too." , "You wait" cried Georgia, clutching her as sbe slipped off the bed. "You wait until you are In love yourself and II ml that your man only wants you on his terms" There was no sound from Jonny, she stood quite still, smiled even: but Georgle was suddenly con tused. 4 "Jenny?" "Well?" "Are ybii in lovo? With with anyohdy?" "No." ..t Jenny, still standing indifferent ly by the gleaming bed, still smil ing, said it again. rNo.v ' . "You're very vehement about it." "There's; no other way of con vincing you, Georglo," -. "How do you mean oh, 1 seo! But I wasn't getting at you and Eddie," explained Georgle, with the large simplicity that Is sometimes beter than oceans of tact. "I got the idea, for one wild moment, that you were interested In Garth Aveney." . " "1 think we had bettor both turn In. You're getting Imaginative." Jenny's-smile felt nailed to her face. Oh, to be alono! ? "Yes, I must sleep. I have a heavy " date tomorrow. Sorry I was such a fool about Aveney. Only" She stopped pummelling her pillows and turned Inquisitive, amber eyes upon Jenny and her smile. "Why did you ask mo It you could give me and Eddio away to lilm? It was such an amazing Suggestion, especially now he's boss, that 1 naturally wondered" Jenny smiled steadily down at the tray she carried. "I didn't realize this evening that lie had been told I was 'Mrs. Town send.' And I forgot I was supposed to be, und I had myself announced ks 'Mfss Revolt.' And" ' "6h, that's all?" Georgle slumped cosily back and yawned. "Oh. well, tha.'s nothing to worry .about heaps of married women use their maiden names. And, Aveney would probably only think that you were so newly-married that you were shy." "Also i was under the Impres sion," Jenny ploughed on, "that you had told him about yourself ;and Isdrflo. I thought you told him that first night when we met him. with ityder Vale." "My dear kid, I don't confide my love-affairs to perfect slrani-'ei-s!" Ceorgie's yawns wore getting franker and franker. "It's unwise and in tills case, It -wuuld have been suicidal. Imagine tlie situa tion when I discovered, as I should have by tho end of the evening, that this perfect stranger was the Old Man's nephew! who I know was to take over from tho Old Man in tlie near future! No, nn. Ilttla Georgle may be all kinds of o tool, but she Isn't that 1:1ml yet!" Sho snuggled down under the covers, stretching her long limbs one hand under her cheek. Jenny rubbed h.r smile away no ne:'d to keep It there, aehingly. now thai Georgle was so nearly asleep. The big question could be asked with a pretense of Indifference in one's voice only. Sho turned the words over in her mind. Supposliu she said quite simply "Ciirlb Aveney wanted you tn mnrry h!:n. didn't he?" Or would that appear prv Ing-? ' Sho had opened her mouth tn ask It when Ocnrglc's dnnvs) murmur took shapo. . "Good thing you haven't rallen tor Aveney lie's marrying llrlil ta Decrlug, tho actress, as homii as she's free.
