Churches of La Grande
: Making Plans For the
Opening Sunday of the
Summer Season Herte.
A number of interesting church
services have been arranged for Bun
day In La Grande, the first Sunday
of the summer months.
The programs follow:
1 Zlon English Lutheran
v . (M avenue near Fourth)
; Rev. Edwin W. Bracher, pastor of
the Lutheran church, will occupy the
pulpit during the 11 o'clock morning
service Sunday, speaking on the sub
ject "Love In Deed." ? Helen Jensen
will be organist -and the choir will
sing the anthem "Jubilee Echoes."
'. Sunday school begins at 9:45 a. m.
and Luther league at 7 p. m. The
topic Will be "How Should We Pray"
and Imogene Schilling will be leader.

week, and much Interest Is expected
to be shown In the three societies
which meet at 6:45. The hour Is 16

The evening service will begin at
8 o'clock, and Mr. Mortimore will
speak on the subject, "What is
Wrong With the Eighteenth Amend
ment?" He says that so much has
been said to him and in his presence
about this subject that be Is break
ing the usual rule of the evening ser
vice to discuss this topic. The or
chestra will play a prelude-concert
and old favorite hymns will be used
in the song service.
Presbyterian Church
(Sixth street and Washington)
Rev. J. George Walz announces his
subject for Sunday morning at the
' 11 o'clock hour as "Marks of Our Va
cation." Miss Edrls Magulre will-play
the service, and there will be special
vocal music.
Miss Magulre will play the prelude
"Memory Mood,'-1 by Grieg, and the
offertory "Melody," by Prlml. Last
Sunday Mrs. Floyd Sherwood, soprano,
rang most beautifully "My Task" and
Miss Isabelle Miller played the ser
vice In a delightful mood. A cordial
Invitation is extended to all not at
tending divine worship elsewhere, to
strangers In our city, to all who would
worship with us.
Sunday Bible school at 0:45 a. m,
St. Peter's Church (Episcopal)
(Fourth street and O avenue)
Holy communion at 8 a. m. will
open Sunday's program at St. Peter's
church. Church school will be at
0:45 and Holy communion and ser
mon at 11 a. m. The Young People's
Fellowship will meet at 6:30 p. m.
At the 11 o'clock service on Sunday
the confirmation class will make its
first communion, together with the
members of their families and the en
tire congregation. The rector, Rev.
Clarence A. Kopp, will preach upon
the meaning of communion. The
communicants and friends of St. Pet
er's church are .asked to be present
and help to welcome these young peo
ple into the full fellowship, of the
church.
The Gospel Mission
(2201 N. Fir street)
Morning services at the Gospel Mis
sion Sunday will Include Sunday
school at 0:45 with classes for all and
the morning worship at 11 o'clock,
with a sermon by the pastor. Miss
Ditty will be the organist.
Elmer, Carpenter will be leader at
the Young People's meeting at 6:45
p. m.
In the evening, services will begin
at 7:45 and the sermon subject will
be "One Shepherd, One Flock, One
Fold." All, are Invited.
Mid-week meetings are scheduled
for Tuesday and Friday evenings at
7:45 . pt. m., with the study of the
book of , Revelation scheduled for
Tuesday. '
The revival meetings held by Evan
gelist and Mrs. Fred Snyder came to
a close last Sunday night. :
M. E. Church South

The services at the Methodist Epis
copal Church South Sunday will be
gin at 0:45 with Sunday school, fol
lowed by the morning service at 11
o'clock with Eula Webb as organist.
Rev. Andrew J. Starmer is pastor.
The young people will meet at 7
p. m. and the -lesson subject will be
"The Cost of Citizenship."
The evening service begins at 8
o'clock.

Godwin, will speak on the subject
"The Light of the World." Commun
ion service will follow the sermon.
Mrs. H. L. St. John Is organist and
special music will Include a choir se
lection,. The young people of the church
will meet at 7 p. m. and the lesson
subject will be "How Should We
Pray?"
The evening service will begin at
8 o'clock and , the sermon subject is
announced as "God's Choice of Men."
Prayer meeting will be held Thurs
day evening at 8 p. m.
Central Church of Christ
(Pennsylvania avenue)
Special plans are being made to
make the services at the Central
Church of Christ of outstanding In
terest Sunday. The pastor, Rev. Paul
De F. Mortimore, states that the month
of June has proved to be one of the
best months from the standpoint or
attendance in the post, and the pro
gram for this month has been plan
ned with this In view.
Sunday morning the Bible school
meets at 0:45 with a full corps of
trained workers. The school is main
taining the highest average attend
ance in Its history, and Mr. Morti
more believes this Is because of the
interesting and helpful - materials
used, and the' efficient teaching staff.
Miss Dorothy Smutz is superintendent
of the school.
At 11 a. m. the worship service will
attract those who feel the need of
true communion with God in their
worship. The Lord's Supper Is the
central point of the worship of
Churches of Christ each . Sunday

Sunday school at 0:45 a. m. is the
opening event on Sunday's schedule
at the Church of the Nozarene. Les
ter Long Is superintendent.
Morning worship is at 11 o'clock
with the pastor, Rev. Daniel L.
Swartss, to speak on the subject of
"Prayer."
The N. Y. P. S. meeting Is at 6:46
p. m., led by Louise "Swartz. The
lesson will be on "Missions."
At 7:30 p. m. there will be an In
spirational service with special num-,
bers by the choir and orchestra, fol-
lowed by an evangelistic sermon by
the pastor.

Rev. Carlos Plummer will preach on
the subject "In a Storm on The Sea"
at the morning service, beginning at
11. o'clock, Sunday at the Church of
God. Miss Leo la Miller Is organist.

song "JesuB, Master of the Sea."
Sunday school ,will begin at 10
o'clock and the lesson subject will
be, "Joseph the Worker."

First Church of Christ, Scientist
(First and Washington)
. "God : the Only Cause and Creator"
will be the subject of the Lesson
Sermon in - all Churches of Christ,
Scientist, on Bunday, June 6.
The Golden Text will, be "Thou art
worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and
honour and power: for thou hast cre
ated all things, and for thy pleasure
they are and were .created" (Rev.
4:11).
Among the citations which com
prise the Lesson-Sermon will be the
following from the Bible: "The Lord
by wisdom hath founded the earth:
by understanding hath' he established
the heavens" (Prov. 3:10).
The Lesson-Sermon also includes
the following Glossary definition from
the Christian Science textbook, "Sci
ence and Health with Key " to the
Scriptures," by Mary 'Baker Eddy:.
"Creator. - Spirit; mind; Intelligence;
the animating divine principle of all
that is real and good . . . God who
made all that was made and could
not create an atom or an element the
opposite of Himself" (p. 683).
